1st post -Good at killing Plumerias determined to stop this year

Please help where ever you can.

Back on 2007 we brought home some plumeria cuttings and seeds from Hawaii. All have moved on to another life. During spring break we took our family again to Hawaii and brought back 3 cuttings and seeds. 1 of the cuttings rotted, soon after planting (this one broke on our trip back home so I figured it might not make it.) But the other ones seem to be doing great, even with my 2 year old snapping the leaves off them.

We decided to put them in pots this time. So they can be brought inside during the freezing nights that have been the death of them in years past. But after they freeze they come back from the root

Mystery buds yesterday. Donald Angus is the third one in the pot. He's been there a couple of weeks and doesn't really do much. I think perhaps he should get transplanted in to a dryer pot.

For my birthday my husband decided to buy me cuttings, from Hawaii, I received the items below

I was tempted to kill him, he spent about $100 on cuttings, that will most likely kill over the winter again.

This time, I have done my research, I made my pots with 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid mix, and 1/3 potting soil. I think that's a good combination for us here in Tampa where it's hot most of the time with rain a few times a month.

Should I add more perlite?

Mystery duo, plus Donald Angus cutting I purchased at Exotic Plumerias here in town.

Plumeria garden, for my birthday.

My first bud getting ready to open soon. The Plumeria grower here in town told me to leave it alone if it's growing well, but I'm afraid it will get root rot because that pot doesn't drain well at all and has nothing for perlite I think it's just straight peat moss because that's what I've been used to using forever. My newer pots all have a mix of orchid mix, perlite and potting soil and I'm not concerned with them. But I am getting worried about the Donald Angus, I planted it straight after I bought it, and I dont think it's doing so well

They look good but I wouldn't keep them in a community pot and I would take them out of the peat. Keep the unrooted cutting's soil from getting wet until they have several good size leaves which is an indication that roots have formed. That goes for all the unrooted cuttings, regardless of the potting mix. Good luck this time. Hopefully next winter won't be so damn cold in FL!!!! Being in Tampa you'll still have to protect them from cold temps so I'd keep them in pots. You can sink the pots in the garden and lift them before the cold temps arrive. They've come back from the roots but if that keeps happening you'll never get blooms. Once a tip dies back you lose the chance for an info on that branch and have to wait for new branches develop.

What do you want to do with the area? Will it be lawn or will you do flower beds? If it is flower beds, I would use newspapers, under black plastic with mulch on top. That is what I did with a large lot that I turned into a flower area. Where I wanted to plant, I would just cut an 'x', dig a hole and plant whatever I wanted. Eventually some things will come through the plastic and mulch, and some weed seeds will blow onto the mulch, but they are a lot easier to pull than to worry about the whole area. Right now since it has been several years since I did this and Pensacola has had 2 tropical storms and 2 hurricanes since last September, now I am having a lot of weed problems since the storms washed and blew away the mulch and the black plastic is full of holes from the limbs down and the sun has caused it to fall apart. Storms also blew in a bunch of weed seeds. This Fall I will have to replenish the plastic in some areas. Some folks use cardboard instead of the newspapers. I also did this behind our cabin in Indiana, where there was heavy clay and wild raspberry bushes. It worked there too.

Common. Normal for this time of year..:-) Sure you can keep it growing....Alot slower than in full sun, on sunny hot summer days.. It will constantly push out new growth from the top, unless you withdraw light all together. In fact if you used no lights at all, and just stuck them in a window, dependent on the winters light only, they would still grow a tad bit. The thing is, you will never get them to be fully leafed out, unless you provide 14 hours or more of full strength hot light and very warm conditions.. perfect conditions.. Hard to mimick in winter, especially in Canada. By nature they want to drop leaves at this time of year, especially in the fashion as you describe. Why even in Texas they are dropping leaves as you described.. My local nursery owner has a few, loosing leaves like crazy, like yours, in full sun, and in a hot greenhouse anyway..Don't fret.:-) Not to worry. They will not die, nor will they stop "growing" if you providing them some light. They will almost stop pushing leaves, and maybe not at all, if you withdraw all light and warmth. Your major concern should be your "watering" habits, and "root rot". Be careful, especially if your soil is not porous and free draining... At this time of year, your soil should not be wet more than a couple days at a time if in dormancy stage.. If so, you will loose them unless you are keeping them in active growth under warm lights and a warm enviroment..;-) Dormancy does not mean it is entirely asleep as some of our outdoor plants, such as perenials, it just means it is growing at a much SLOWER pace..Believe or not, they will still look for a drink, even in dormancy stage.. Just keep it alive, and the full strentgh of spring sun will bring it back to full leaves, and possibly flowers too..;-) Sorry about spelling. they look fine to me. i've been to Orlando before and the weather seems similar to Houston. i would just leave it out in the sun.

if you're worried about the soil/peat being to wet, you can goto the grocery store and spend one dollar on a pack of bamboo skewers. stick a skewer in each pot. every couple of days pull them out and see how wet your soil is. water accordingly.

you can gently squeeze the cuttings to check for mushiness.

They look pretty good so far. I would maybe drill a hole in the pot with bad drainage because plumerias really dont like standing water. I think a mild winter will be coming to florida this year. All you have to do is get them past hurricane season since florida is, unfortunately, overdue for a hurricane.

I drilled a hole in the community pot, good news no water came out at a all. I have bamboo skewers i'll check the moisture see how I'm doing in there thanks. Checked the Donald Angus for mushyness... and it still feels solid like the other cuttings.

I'm so tempted to poke in the donald angus. It has given me a couple of leaves but they fell off when i tapped on them. I'm not at all certain what that could mean.

Your plumerias look great. Listen to Karen, and remove them from the community pot. Rooting in the half liter water bottle is also an excellent choice because you use less soil and the bonus is that you can see roots and not have to wonder if it's rooting or not. Be sure to cut out holes at the bottom of the bottles for drainage. Have fun and enjoy your plumerias.
