tomato hornworms in a jar

I volunteer in a kindergarten class. I have a tomato hornworm pupa that buried itself in dirt in a plastic jar. I would like for the children to see the moth emerge in the spring. In my garden, that happens around May 1. My question is: What causes the moth to emerge? The temperature? The daylight? An 'incubation time'? In other words, will the moth come out around May 1. if the jar is kept at room temperature in the kindergarten class?

Thank for your help.
