Is there a such thing as too much heat??

If you read my last two posts, you'll know I'm a first-timer with plumerias and I'm in the process of rooting 3 cuttings. So far, so good but it's been extremely hot here in SC the last few days. Usually it's only in the upper 80's, lower 90's this time of year but we had a heat wave the last week and it was in the upper 90's and even hit 100 and 102 the last two days. My other plants have suffered a little, but my plumeria seem to be loving it! It seems like they just took off in the heat, but being that it's my first time, I just wasn't sure if that kind of scorching heat was harmful to them. It doesn't look like they are suffering, but I didn't know if long-term heat like this would kill them. It's only June, but by August it will be in the lower 100's here.

This is the top of the light pink plumeria. Is this the beginning of an inflo?

Also, when I do get blooms I will have to post pictures of them for you all because I do not know exactly what cultivar they are. My SIL sent them to me in packages that were only marked "Hawaii White" or "Hawaii Pink". I'd just like to have a name to go with my Plumerias when I "talk" to them...LOL :)

One more question for future reference. What is a trusted website to buy plumeria cuttings from?

Maybe folks from the Valley of the Sun Plumeria Society in Phoenix may be able to comment on too much heat? :)

Not an expert but cuttings like bottom heat during the rooting process, high 90s-100s might be to much in direct sunlight. Maybe 6 hours of morning sun with some shade at hottest time of day would be better. Your plants look fine to me, 3rd & last photos showing inflows. Best bet for trusted sellers Maui Plumeria Gardens and Florida Colors Nursery, in my honest opinion good luck Dave.

I use wick watering for more constant watering and feeding to the plants as well as convenience. I use 1/4 tsp of 20-20-20 per gallon and use this with every fill of the reservoirs. My lights are on 11 hours a day and my plants are in the basement and it is pretty constant at 20C or 70F. For a soil less mix I use 1 part peat moss and 9 parts vermiculite for wicking. With this system I have had some flowers reach 3" across, Ness' Blue Confetti. For the few plants I have not on wicks I use 100% vermiculite, but they have to be watered often. It has been beautiful here the past few days,but too hot for tender seedlings and old widowed women. I sat some plants out by the front door (purchased plants, WS seedlings, and bulbs that didn't quite get the care they needed during their stay in the garage over winter)and to my dismay, or shock, when I stepped outside they all looked like they had been plopped down in the middle of the Sahara Desert not the middle of the Appalachian Mountains! It's hot. And let me add, I am one that has been whining about how cold it has been lately. So we go from what felt like freezing to this?? They are calling for rain/thunderstorms starting Wednesday, and that is fine by me. I only wish I had my plants out in the garden before then, but doubt it. Somebody pass me the Pina Colada, or Margarita, or whatever the popular beach/hot weather drink is!

Oh, I definitely agree that we can have too much rain. We had 12" in just May 6-7 alone (a 24 hour period) and we're easily 10 inches over normal for the year. Our May was the wettest ever in recorded history, and the same for May through mid-June for a 6-week period. Our basement has flooded and sump pump run constantly since then, making a creek down the curb in front of our house all the way down the block. The birds love the "bird bath" effect created by bumps in the pavement where water collects. Let's see - how can I count the garden effects? Roses that never ball are balling, roots in some plants are rotting out or cankering up from the soil, vegetable seeds rot before they germinate, mosquitos are truly gargantuan and unstoppable regardless of how much bug spray is used, and every shovel full digging sounds like an old cow pulling its foot out of the mud. Even the tulips set their bulb replacements OUT of the soil to avoid all the moisture - never seen them do that in 20 years of bulbs. All the farmers have large patches of ground that are still unplanted in July because the fields are under water, and usually Nebraska is dry. Until this spring our water table was way down from drought two years ago. Interesting note about the clematis. For what it's worth, even in a normal garden year our clematis is quite happy without needing the garden stone, as long as the roots stay underground. Our loamy clay holds enough moisture and cool even in hot summer to keep them happy, so I doubt we'd need the clematis stone. It sounds like a terrific idea for hot and dry climates, though, to provide that artificial "shade" for the roots to keep them cool. Cynthia

Your cuttings look fantastic. claws are growing which become leaves and will put out roots in your soil. I cannot tell if you have an inflo coming hope, sorry. Yes Need bottom heat like sitting on concrete, but also need some relief late afternoon heavy west sun can burn the trunk . Stay in there they will make it. when the sun is gone, spray them with water, let a little drip into the soil.

Well I'm far from being an expert but I totally think that looks like an inflo! And all the pics look like they are doing great. Interesting and good info for me too about the morning sun and afternoon sun. It's been getting very hot here and I recently moved mine under a tree to get some relief from the sun. I also totally agree with Dave about the web sites, those are the two that came to my mind right away. Hawaiisally on ebay is very good too. And cuckoosnest if you want to start some from seeds.

Thanks guys! That's a lot of helpful info. My house faces east, well sorta north-east because the sun comes up more to the right in the front...anyway, my plumerias have been in the front yard or front porch. The front porch doesn't get any sun after lunch time and the front yard, depending on how far out I have them, gets sun until the evening. I'll make sure to keep them out of the sun in the afternoon though, I never knew that.
I will also keep you all updated on my cuttings...haven't posted pics of my third one yet because I just planted it recently so there's really nothing to report yet. It's a dark pink (well, the package said "red" but I just keep calling it dark pink..haha).

I have been to Exotic Plumeria. Amazing place, makes one drool. I purchased a plant from them a few years ago and would gladly do so again.

Crystal- Your last picture shows what is usually the start of a inflo (all those little dots). Also, watch having a plant too close to a brick wall or a side of a house as these absorb and reflect heat causing the stems and leaves to get sunburn. I put a cheap reed fence against my house to cut the radiation. Bill

Ohhh, Okay! Thanks Bill!!

Oh and I went to Exotic Plumeria, Florida Colors and Maui Gardens today to compare prices and products...Exotic Plumeria has a HUGE selection, but is also more expensive for some of the same cuttings. I'll probably stick with the other two unless they carry something I can't find.

wanted to correct something I said.. I said "spray" your plants, let trickle.. Ment "Mist" from a spray bottle, don't want them to get too wet. To stay dry until they leaf out.

LOL, thanks Karen, I knew what you meant, I say the wrong thing all the time meaning something else, but I caught your drift..LOL When I'm doing my evening watering, I turn the hose nozzle to mist and give them a quick mist. I don't do it every evening, just on days when it was nasty hot!

This is the first year I have ordered several cuttings from Maui Gardens. You then know getting from the owner Jennifer you will get 18 to 20" long thick cuttings and she always gives a free one. I did bid on one of Hawaii Sandys auction, great plants, but you have to be prepared to bid high..won one extremely great one. First year I have felt "I can do this" in growing cuttings. I have never ordered from any others like exotic..
