Insect eggs hatching inside my tomatillo stalks?

Hi, I have a tomatillo plant (or rather had a tomatillo plant, it went to the big compost heap in the sky) that appeared to have some kind of insect eggs laid inside the stalk. It looked OK when I got it but flopped over a week or two later. I staked it but a few days later it flopped over again and this time I noticed that the main stalk was swelling and splitting and what looked like numerous green eggs were bulging out. Needless to say I tossed it but I'm a little concerned about the rest of my garden since I don't know what those eggs were.

This plant was a late addition, purchased from a farmers market and so far appears to be the only one affected. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I be worried about the rest of the yard suffering a similar fate?
