finally got the planting done

My mixing of several hundred gallons of soil mix finally got me motivated to plant my cuttings. So I got out my rooting compound, my mix, my watering cans of superthrive, seaweed extract and water, my collection of cut off water bottles and my log book. I put an inch of redwood chips (so the gravel does not run out the holes)in fifteen 5 gallon pots and added a few inches of gravel(to add heat and give the pot weight). Then I potted up 5 cuttings:

Now I continued filling the fifteen pots and logging the varieties in my book by pot location:

The remaining extra large cuttings were put into a large pot to support their stems while rooting. Now I just wait until the leaves appear and the roots show in the bottle. Just keep the sun out to get them going. Now I have to pot up some of my 5 year olds:

The cuttings in the background are about three dozen from last year that are ready to plant.

Good for you, Kay! It sure makes it easier if the soil is at least damp to pull those weeds out. I still have one row to weed. Only trouble is, the weeded areas (especially the spurge) are bouncing right back. The only way I can weed is to sit in a lawn chair and move it down the row, one daylily at a time. I cannot kneel or bend over for very long. It took me a long time, and I've been procrastinating too much on that one last section. I'm going to enlist my DH this long weekend to attack the spurge again. Nancy

I have naturally curly hair - almost 63. When I was 5, with curls like Shirley Temple, my cousin with the thin straight hair decided she needed a perm but would only go for a Toni if I went too (her family had money, mine did not - guess who "won"). No hairdresser should have permed my hair - talk about a brillo pad! I have hated going to the hairdresser ever since. I am also hair dryer challenged and diffuser challenged. So I stick my head under the tap to wash it and then add some curl enhancer and that is it. Yet when I go for my colour and cut (yesterday) I always have it blowed straight - by someone who knows how to use a brush and dryer - not just swing a dryer around and then use a flat iron - that will kill your hair. While my hair has always been dry - and very thick - it does look very good when done by a hairdresser - I have to be very careful since my hair can be styled in many ways - 95% of which do not suit me. People always ask me why I curl my hair when it looks better straight! As if....Actually, even if I could use a dryer properly, it would take forever for me to dry my hair. I remember being told that post menopause my hair would start to thin out - well it hasn't. I agree re the smell of perms - I would know immediately if someone even came near me. Now if only I suited any other colour than auburn I would be happy. Red is the devil to maintain - good thing I always wear a hat. It is funny, we always want the hair we don't have. Great that you are happy with your perm - but it is funny that my hair looks just like yours after my tap routine.

Wow that is a long list Rose_crazy_da. Just curious, which of them grow the best in your garden? I have not been to Vandermeer before and it is in Ajax. I can tell that Graham Thomas is a stingy bush. This is the second time I have grown this rose. The first one died within a month that I planted it. The one I planted last spring is okay, definitely not as fast growing as the others. It is slow growing but I am only judging by its first year. I will have to see how it does this season. I heard or rather read both negative and positive things about Gertrude Jekyll. I've read about her nasty thorns...lol. Can't be much worst than Jude's thorns. I would definitely grow more of Mary Rose if I can find her again. The one I have is the first rose to bloom and is covered with buds. I would definitely plant this one in threes. The other ones I may think of planting is threes is Teasing Georgia, Crown Princess Margareta, Heritage, Golden Celebration, L.D. Braithwaite and Evelyn. If you ever come across Golden Celebration and L.D. Braithwaite, they do well in our zone. I love L.D. because it is more cane hardy of all the Austins so far. Every year, a few of his big tall canes survive our winters which means taller Austins for me.

How many VW's? : )

Will you leave them in the driveway Bill? or move them in the backyard. I know they like the heat from the concrete, so i would expect that you would rather keep them there, but i wonder about others "helping themselves.." I certainly hope that people respect your property...

Wow now that is what I call a lot of great looking cuttings. I think I need to come shopping!!! You know how us ladies love to shop even if it is window shopping :) Shame I am in Texas and you are in CA. Joan

Are all those from your trees? If so, you must have some heavy branchers.

Amazing! To any plumeria person, that looks like a work of art!! Cuttings everywhere! Yay! I'm speechless :) Now I'm trying to figure out how many hours you've spent working.

Nicole- I have this down to a science so the set up and tear down take more time than the actual planting. The actual planting probably took a couple of hours. I did ninety cuttings (20 varieties) all from my plants and once you have all the black pots with gravel ready, the cuttings layed out in groups, the water bottles half full of soil , the trash cans of soil and the make-shift table with root compound and cans of water mix, the dip in water, dip in rooting compound, stick in bottle, fill with soil and water takes less than a minute. I have various friends who drop by to get a handout plant and people who drop by can leave with a plant or two. I give some to various fund raisers and plant some in civic gardens. Joan- you would be welcome to shop as with my volkswagen theory, I cannot keep any. I may eventually sell some of the better ones to offset the cost of supplies but, being happily retired, I do not want a job. It already cuts into my surf time too much. Now I just wait for leaves.

Ha. When I saw all those cuttings I had two thoughts come to mind. Then I saw that jimithing and Laura had the same reaction!

much smarter this year. By putting the tape on the cuttings I IDed 89 out of the 9` cuttings. Only two mysteries. I went through last years cuttings and i could only id 20 of the 40 remaining cuttings. So I have 20 unknowns. The lesson is label your cuttings as they are cut. I have used tape which lasts about two years, or paint pens which last for about 3-5 years. Now I have to wait for flowers for the twenty which is a mistake. Oh well, live and learn.
