Ulrike, they should be fine. If you got them in the soil good, so they won't heave when you water them, nor sink... and then fertilize... should be fine.

you may want to look in my shed, in the kitty litter buckets, I think there is some vermicompost left in there.

Well, your mom gave you great advice (Hi Moni!) and you can feed them whatever you want. We don't judge anyone here. lol

I love that we just had a cooldown in the weather, even though it may not last long, because that will help soothe the pansies, who likely have been saying 'what are we doing here in this hot world?". I think they'll be fine. You can mulch or not, your choice. If you leave them unmulched, the ground might cool a little faster. However, since they're in a south-facing bed (aren't they?), mulching would also help keep the ground from heating up too much on the sunny, hot afternoons we have left in Sept. and Oct.

Moni, I think they were stunting a little because she bought them early and has been holding them in their containers while waiting for the weather to cool. Also, you know how watering those tiny store containers leaches the nutrition right out of the soil. I believe that's why she's wanting to feed them.
