Indoor vegtable problems

I have a small container garden in NYC, (inside but with wide open windows) and nothing is thriving this year. I know I have a big whitefly problem, but I think there is something else going on, from what I have read I think it is a potassium defiency, but using a fertilzer weekly with a high potash content isn't helping. Could anyone help identify what is happening to these tomato's? The lower leaves get yellow spots, then they start to turn brown from the outside in. (In addition the carrots are almost totally brown and the basil is also turning brown. Various types of hot peppers seem to be the only thing not having problems, but very few flowers are setting.)For the whiteflies, I have been using insecticide soap and am about to start with neem oil. Yellow sticky traps don't seem to catch them at all, I have seen them land and take off on them.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would take a look at the roots and see what kind of condition they are in. If the roots are rotting they aren't going to take up the soil nutrients well.

On your traps, it sounds like the stickum has gotten dry or dirty. They normally are good at catching whiteflies. Try getting some new traps or put fresh stickum or vaseline on them.

most veggies are full sun .. that means 8 to 12 hours of the full intensity of the sun ...

not getting enough sun .. and getting too much fertilizer has most likely caused root damage .... plus whatever was in the soil to begin with ....

my only suggestion would be to start again ... sterilize your soil [no matter what the bag says] .... and get supplemental lighting ...

i think you are frustrated.. because you are attempting the impossible ...

you brought the bugs in somehow ... and as you are finding out.. it is near impossible to get rid of them .. so the trick is to insure that you dont bring them in in the first place ... and now you should get rid of all the veggies and the soil ... and you should sanitize all your house plants.. before you try this experiment again ... there are systemic chemicals for the houseplants to rid them of your plague ... they work in teh sap of the plant ... obviously you can NOT use such on plants you wish to eat ... but you have to get the bugs out of the houseplants also ....

Update: Took quite a while to get both the time and the money to re-pot these, but I finally did it last night. Last season I had my chillies in self watering pots, and I've upgraded that system with these — to include a larger reservoir. The new reservoirs comfortably take 20 litres of water and nutrients, which should buy me an extra few days of negligence between watering them. Here's the wicking system: The new plants have definitely suffered from being left in the small pots for too long. The larger plant needed to be re-potted even more urgently. Until yesterday, it was in the same size pot as these small ones are now. Here's the larger one, it's a bhut jolokia: Ideally I'd give them all larger pots and more space, but I think I'm testing the patience of my housemates already. Outside there's not a lot of space either, the conditions aren't great, and the kids next door have an incredible amount of sports accessories which come flying over the garden wall on a very regular basis, with occasionally destructive results.

Fungi and molds are normal parts of a soils make-up. A few are harmful, but usually those fungaluglies only raise their heads when soil conditions lean heavily toward water retention being excessive. Monitoring your soil's moisture level with a wood dowel rod sharpened in a pencil sharpener or skewer will be helpful in avoiding over-watering and soggy soils. You're probably under-fertilizing, btw. Also, if you're not already watering so you flush the soil when you water, ytou should do that on a regular basis - say every 4th or 5th time you water. This accomplishes 2 things: it keeps the level of mineral salts in the soil low, which facilitates water/nutrient uptake, and it prevents the ratio of nutrients in the soil solution, each to all the others, from getting so badly skewed that the plant has difficulty taking up nutrients because of an excess of another. Indoor Herbs Problems: basil, mint, parsely

Hi! I recently bought some herbs for my kitchen. I got mint, basil, parsley and cilantro. They are located on a south facing window and receive plenty of light and sun during the day. I started watering them every other day with 100ml of water and they were thriving! However, I started noticing Gnats flying around my kitchen so I thought probably it was too much water causing excess moisture, besides the gnats, I also noticed some white spottings on my mint and parsely. So I decided to isolate all the herbs from each other for 1 week and barely watered them during that week hoping the gnats would go away. I also sprayed some natural pesticide to all. After a week, gnats are gone but, white spots are still there but no new spots that I notice. However the herbs are wilting and dropping. I have tried to water them with a mister but it seems to be too little water..so I am debating on what is the proper care. How much water, how often? With a mister or regular watering? I can't seem to figure out the proper balance to keep the soil moist enough without attracting gnats. I put plenty of water on them today hoping they recover but now I am fearing that gnats might come back?! Appreciating any helpful advise!!! Thanks!!! Sounds like fungus gnats. They like soil that is high in organics and is kept moist. If you do a search on them you can find info on controlling them. One way is to add a mosquito dunk to a container of water and use that water on your plants. As for the compost, if you want to continue using it, there are various ways you can sterilize it that a search will pull up. Rodney
