Plants update August 2011 - PICS

All plants growing happy, days are in the high 70s, low to mid 80s and sunny with good humidity. Here you can seee my succulents, Agave attenuatas, king palms, arecas, pigmy dates, bougainvilleas, Ti plant "Lilinoi", Phil. Xanadu, Crotons oak leaf, Red Abyssinian banana, Cycads. There is also a small Singapore Plumeria that I just purchased while we were in Maui last month. Let's see how it does in L.A. Most of my plants have Pothos hanging as an accent plant around the perimeter of the container. With the Ti Plant I only use spring water since Tis are VERY fluoride sensitive. Also you can see my Balinese statue (which I got in Bali last year), all mossy and green (love the look!) It is all a container garden.

Wow, great pics! I always love to see your yard! Tons of great designing and placement! Every plant really has a purpose. I like what you did with your AC unit. I was thinking of getting some type of wooden fence to block mine, but eventually my plants overcrowded it anyways so you cant see it anymore!

Your Plumeria Obtusa should do fine in Cali. Mine survived an entire winter indoors without any water at all and it came back fine so if mine can handle that, yours can definitely handle good care!

Very nice plants. But that's not fair. You live in z10. I don't think the inside of my house is a z10. Must be nice. If you mind where are you located?

Josh: Such beautiful colors on that variegated and full green on the others. I would say they are very happy campers. Thanks everyone, ssk22, I have a friend on the palm forum from your area with just as much if not more than me outside. He just has to go thruogh great measures to protect everything during winter. Beachplants, I love that agave ovatifolia has to be my favorite. I will probably cry when one of mine goes into bloom because those are one of the few agaves that don't sucker. Tom the yucca in question is an aloifolia. It grew as a second head to the mother plant, but broke off at 12' tall. The owner was a friend and so I cut it and brought it home. every year I just dig it up and turn it to get a different curve. My soil is hard red clay so I tilled it pretty good added enough gravel, compost, and top soil to raise the bed about 4". About the musa if its in a pot and not too big I would keep it in a heated room with lights so that it would still have a full crown come spring. If you have to place it in the garage by spring it will be just a pole. I didn't plant my musa its first year and keep it in a dark location. The pseudostem rotted, so I had to cut it to the corm.

Thanks gang! The second peduncle popped open yesterday evening - definitely not the same color as the other bloom, much more white. I've had this hoya about 6 years, neglected for about 5 and a half until life settled down again and I was able to focus on hoya once more. (hate to admit how many I lost!) Something in the back of my mind makes me think that this was an EA H. carnosa 'rubra' the variegated one that reverted to all green so I rooted it. But I can't recall for sure. Any thoughts? And truly it doesn't matter if I never have a name, I'm just thrilled to have a hoya blooming in my life again! It's the simple things! Showing both blooms with different colors. Greg, the weather was beautiful on some days. Even today felt like a summer day that was rainy. It got to about 60F this afternoon, but with lots of humidity which made it felt nicer. The forecast looks like some ups and downs, but I see at least 3 days out of 10 getting to the 50s and only 3 days with a freeze. And all the snow is gone in my area and Im sure its gone in Brooklyn too. Some of the parking lots still have some piles of snow, but they are getting much smaller and even the 5 foot piles of snow that were on my block just 25 days ago, are not completely gone! The Bougainvillea was a great deal. They are really great plants. One thing I noticed is that they must have full sun and a bit of neglect to bloom well. Mine didnt bloom until late summer and fall because it wasnt in a huge amount of sunlight. They will grow very nicely when given shade and some water, but if kept on the dry side (but not too dry) and if given lots of sun, it should be loaded with blooms all summer! They are one of those plants that reward you with blooms if you pretend that they barely exist (which is hard to do when they are covered in blooms!) I protected my oleander the same way as my other palms. I put some x-mas lights over it, a frost cloth, and a plastic garbage bin. I think I may have even over protected it because some seed pods opened and its also trying to start to grow! I cant wait until it starts blooming again. It sounds like you are really enjoying the beautiful weather in Florida! I was looking at the forecast there and it looks amazing. I think Orlando was suppose to get close to 90F yesterday (not sure if they did or not). Im glad to here that the coconut palms are alive even if, unfortunately, they were damaged. Thanks Alex! I wanted to do the same in front of the AC, something to cover the front and block that fugly YORK logo/paneling. Sometime in the near future I hope :)

Very nice! You have great plants! I can see the w.robusta palms in the background of the first pic. I really like that palm. They are so common. When I went to san diego they were EVERYWHERE! I love them.

Hunter, the palm in the first pic is a King Palm 'Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana'
Yes, W. Robusta is everywhere in SoCal, same with Phoenix Canariensis, love that palm, but too big for my container garden ;)

You could disguise the AC unit with a bamboo screen. It would fit the theme. Maybe even a long planter with live bamboo kept pruned like a hedge to the top of the AC unit.

Such a cosy urban garden. We're all jealous of your zone 10! I got tired of hauling potted tropicals in every winter. When I discovered hardy palms and bananas my dilemma was solved!

@earthworm .... ditto! :-)

I live in a condo now and even though I am on the bottom floor and have a screened in porch, it is tiny and I have such a limited amount of space to bring in my plants when Fall gets here. But...wow...I would love to have a place where I could have plants-galore once again. But, I make due with my little 7 x 8 ft. screened in porch, cram it full of plants in the Summer and drag them inside in the Fall. :-)
