Can anyone give me info on 'Gold Rubio' plumeria?

Laura was kind enough to pick up this plumeria for me. I have not been able to find any info on it online anywhere. Does anyone know anything about it? I was also hoping to see a pic of it.

I also was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a Desert Sunrise plumeria? I have the chance to get a cutting for $50 but I was wondering if anyone knew if I could find it any cheaper.

Do you know which booth Laura got it from? I don't remember seeing any with that name at the show.

Desert Sunrise is a Jungle Jack plant. From his webpage, drop him a note for the price of a 1G rooted plant. I'll see John I. this weekend at the plumeria meeting, and I'll look for a new price list.

I really don't know and Laura is off on her job now for 5 days. I will try and ask her when she gets back. She's so busy I hate to nag her.

I thought maybe Desert Sunrise was a Jungle Jacks plumeria. Thanks for confirming that for me! I would really appreviate it if you could find out any info on the price. I was thinking about calling him. I cannot imagine that a 1 gal rooted tree would be more than $50. Even if it was, it would be worth it to buy it rooted from him.

I don't doubt the quality of the cutting I could buy but tha's a lot to me and if for some reason it doesn't root, I'm out a bunch of money.

Hello iandyaz, late spring is best for cutting and planting. Wait till the new leaves are about 3 inches long then cut the main branch, let the new cutting dry and callous over, maybe 3,4 or 5 days. Then plant only 3 to 5 inches deep. The roots will take over for stability. I have rooted 2 inche thick branches as well. It all grows. Air layering is cool and grafting works even faster! Graft on to another plant and no waiting for roots to form Oh and the darker the color as in dark red, can take months to root. Cheers! Let me know in the spring how things go.

Ashley, what has JoeReal had to say? I'd trust his opinion on this one for sure. And, I wonder if taste will be more geographically influenced on these "Gold" series? Thought I read that somewhere. Here's more info about these 3 hybrids from the UCR site (you may have already read this): The following information is from The Facts sheets of Tahoe Gold, Yosemite Gold and Shasta Gold mandarins written by M.L. Roose and T.E. Williams, Department of Botany and Plant Sciences' University of California, Riverside. Hybrids of the Encore and Dancy mandarins and Temple tangor. Tahoe Gold is a recently-released (2002) mandarin variety developed within the University of California Riverside citrus breeding program. The tree grows vigorously and is somewhat spreading in form, with a tendency to alternate bearing. Tahoe Gold (TDE3) is a hybrid with Temple tangor, and Dancy and Encore mandarins in its parentage. It is a mid-season maturing mandarin hybrid that combines large fruit size, attractive deep orange rind colour, rich fruit flavour and the virtual absence of seeds even in mixed plantings. The season for Tahoe Gold is mid-January to mid-February at Riverside. The fruit does not hold well on the tree. Yosemite Gold is a recently-released (2002) mandarin variety developed within the University of California Riverside citrus breeding program. The average fruit size is large for a mandarin (classed as Mammoth by California state standards) with a mean width of 75mm (2.95 in.) and a height of 58 mm (2.30 in.), giving a height to width aspect ratio of 0.78, and a mean weight per fruit of 175 grams (6 oz.-heavy for the fruit size). The rind of fruit from trees with very light crops is sometimes excessively rough or bumpy. The rind is quite easy to peel when fruit are mature, but can be more adherent early in the season. The fruit is moderately juicy averaging 42% juice content. The flesh is seedless, bright orange, finely-textured and juicy. The flavour is rich and sweet. The season for Yosemite Gold (TDE4) is January to mid-March and the fruits hold well on the tree into April. Shasta Gold is a recently-released (2002) mandarin variety developed within the University of California Riverside citrus breeding program. The tree grows vigorously and is somewhat spreading in form, with a tendency to alternate bearing. It can achieve a moderately-large size at maturity. Any Atreano Gold fig info?

Hello Leon and others! I have a confession. My Atreano Golden came from a friend of mine and I think his last name is Mecurio. He use to live about an hour and a half east of me just southh of Raleigh. I found my notes and now understand what happened. The fig he sold me was called Golden Atreano. I found the original label when I moved all my trees inside. What happened to me was squirrels! I make metal tags on all my tree and I found the metal tag bent down tucked in the corner of the container. After investigating other trees, I found 5 others with the same problem.....SQUIRRELS! Anyway, the tree is really called Atreano Gold. The leaf patterns are different from Atreano but grows very fast like Atreano. I remember now, Mr Mercurio said he purchase a lot of rare cuttings up north and also got cuttings from friends back home in Italy and Canada. He had a lot trees for sale back in 2008 and I bought around 8 or 10 from him. One day he emailed me saying he was moving back home and needed to sell his tree collection. I was suppose to go visit and purchase all his trees but could not make the trip. The eye on these figs are closed. I plan on planting this tree in my yard come spring. In my pictures below I called the fig Green Turkey because I did could not find the label. I thought I bought the tree from Lowes. The reason why is in 2008 I started my collection and bought 2 Brown Turkey figs and repotted 4 trees in the exact same container color and all. All 4 trees had their tags removed and I assume I got them from Lowes but that day I only bought 2 from Lowes. I found the 2 BT from Lowes. They were in a different location from my other trees and I thought my Atreano Golden was the BT. Well, I"m glad I located my notes and labels. I relabeled all my trees and double labels some. Anyone growing Plumeria in the NW?

FYI. I'm in the Portland area. You can have plumeria's here (heck, I've been growing some from seeds), but as others have stated, you can let them go dormant during the winter, or bring them indoors 9 months out of the year (Oct-June), or have a heated and insulated greenhouse (not enough sun to really keep it warm). Plumeria's need to stay above the 40's; they will go dormant if temps get under 65-70. I've let my adult tree go dormant, it starts sprouting leaves come April (indoors). The babies are all on heat mats and under light year-round. My plumeria's thrived in direct sun during the summer (I no longer have that, so the adult hasn't bloomed). I keep them under a T5 light while indoors (12 hours) and the seedlings or rooting ones are on a heat mat and they're doing okay (not thriving, but alive). I'm actually thinking about moving to the coast. I would think they would need more protection and kept warm. I think a greenhouse would be best. I figure, if my friend can keep her plumies alive in Minnesota, we can do it Oregon. :) If you want, I post pics on my Instragram account. Just look for #plumeriasinpnw. Good luck!

John had Desert Sunrise but I believe he had a waiting list and sold out already. Irene Jones aka IJPLUMIES on MPG had some rooted Desert Sunrise for sale so you may want to hit her up on MPG. Desert Sunrise is a good bloomer but if your in a cooler will not perform like pics of Desert Sunrise from Sonia or people who have it in warmer areas:

Here's a pic of one of my smaller Desert Sunrises blooming in 79 degree weather in July. Jack's Orange is a better choice if your in a cooler area

Hi Plumeria Freak,
I just called Jungle jacks. They have a bucnh of Desert Sunrise rooting in 1 gal containers. I was told they would be ready in about 2 weeks. Price will be $74.95.

Thanks for the tip on Jacks Orange but I plan og growing it under my 600 watt HPS light anyhow. I have a few that have to be grown under that light to get max flower color anyways, Penang Peach, jackie, Golden Ray and GIna. I don't mind having to grow indoors. I like having some in my house so I can enjoy fragrance.

Awwww...what is the "Gold Rubio?...." good question!!! LOL

I picked up these cuttings at the Corner booth..i believe it called Mona Lisa's ...she did call me back on the one cutting that i had a question about...this cutting..:Gold Rubio" was in the bin on the bottom level...the other named ...more valued plumies were on the top..like Jeannie Morange...i jsut picked these up at the last second...because if you bought others from the lower shelf she let you have them 4 for 20 dollars...so i grabbed a few of the "Gold RUbios"....

I wish that we knew more about them...but that is the best that i can tell you...i didnt recognize the name either...i was just trying to make myself calm down while looking at all of those wonderful cuttings...lol

Erika Jen and I were having a time trying to decide on the ones we wanted...so good to have fellow addicts close to you to support our addictions!!!

HEY LAURA!!

Diana Irene is in Canada and will not be back for a bit, so I do not think she will be back in time for the meeting on Sunday, per her husband. So if anyone is contacting Irene aka IJPLUMIES her husband may be returning some of her emails for her. So hold tight as Irene will not be back for another week or so..

Hello Everyone, I think I know which Plumeria you're talking about. I got one of those but the one I got was marked Golden Rainbow, it was in the lower shelf corner closest to where the seller had her table and everyone was paying. If that's the one Laura got then I have a picture but I don't know how to post it here, sorry I haven't learned how to. But if you want Andrew send me an email and I will e-mail you the photo I have.

I have to buy soil tomorrow. I hope to get my plants all potted tomorrow, I leave for Hawaii on Wednesday.

Laura, do you remember the guy upstairs by the elevator, I think you bought a cutting from him... He had the desert rose and potted plumerias as well? I bought a cutting but it did not have a name in it. It is supposed to be Kaneohe Sunset I think. Do you, or anyone else remember what he had for sale, was it Sunset? Andrew and Laura, is it possible that the "Gold Rubio" label was smudged or the name misunderstood? Because it would make sense that the name is actually "Gold Rainbow" or "Golden Rainbow," which I've seen around. There's a link below.

Well, happy Mothers Day, Laura! You've saved Andrew a lot of frustrating searching for info, that's for sure.

Yes, it was a frenzy! Laura, I think you are right that the cutting we got was Kaneohoe Sunburst. Because I had bought Sunrise from Mona Lisa, and wanted Sunburst!

I am finishing planting my cuttings today. Off to Hawaii on Wednesday. Will have my iPad with me, so I will keep watch of the forum when I am gone. Aloha and Mahalo to everyone who has been so nice and helpful on the forum!

Hi Andrew - I heard back from Irene. She is rooting some Desert Sunrise but... she doesn't ship, and even so the roots have barely started. With 2 months of gloomy weather coming, it would take quite a while (was only in the 50s today).

John from JJ spoke at the plumie meeting last week, and he'll have more available next year.
