Potted king Sago: 2nd flush

After getting a flush out of my potted sago palm back in April-May I was hoping that meant I would get two this growing season. I noticed last night that my hope is coming true. A new flush is getting ready to push up. That will be three since last July.

Are you sure it is a "King" Sago (Cycas revoluta)? They are one of the slower cycad species and difficult to get a 2nd flush unless there is a long growing season.

What did you do to get it to flush so early in the year in April?

I bought it from Home depot back in October 2005. It was marked King Sago. I see them at home depot all of the time and they all look just like mine. I had it in a northeastern window over the winter getting some morning sun. In late March we had two consecutive days in the low 80s. I stuck it out in full sun and it started. It took some time to finish. It didn't finish until late April until it went out for the year. I said April-May but as I think about it it definately was those two days in March that started it. Any idea how they do as far as getting rootbound? I have never re-potted it since I bought it.

I think they are hardy only to zone 8, maybe 7b. You could grow it in a pot and bring it in when the temps drop too low. They are slow growing and require little if any care. Below is a link to some info. Here is a link that might be useful: sago palm

I read this thread and kind of marvel. The effort people expend to grow plants in a hostile climate. I bought a $5 sago 40 years ago when I bought my house, it is over six feet tall The male flower is (like) two feet long, every year for at least the past 15 years. A flush consists of at least two dozen fronds , (or leaves) if you prefer. I have successfully raised and given away probably three dozen pups broken off from the parent plant. Most survive, maybe 80% but some don't. It gets cold here, we are at 1700 ft. elevation and freezes some years but I have never had a sago show damage from frost. Plumaria, that's another crap shoot, but the sagos do very well here. I have managed to keep twenty pups that are well established and in the ground. In other words, this climate is very agreeable for sagos and they are common all around here, seems like everybody has at least one? I'm not rubbing your nose in it here; I salute the effort to grow (what is almost a tropical), in a climate which is not suitable. Good luck. When it's warm, give it lots of water and fertilizer high in nitrogen, growth is more lush with longer fronds in part sun (i.e. morning sun for a few hours), not full sun. When I had mine in direct sun last summer, it produced compact foliage, put back in shade it looked better - long and arching. My plant was inherited, I estimate it to be about 30 years old with about 30" of clear trunk and 2 offsets at the base, but until I started taking care of it I doubt it was receiving adequate resources. My guess would be you can get 1-3+" of stem growth per year in ideal conditions. For me, in the NE, I get 3 flushes, the last one around Oct/Nov is tricky because it starts getting too cold outside to support fast growth so I am forced to bring it inside near a tall window and rotate it daily to look natural. It is a monster in the house, there's no space big enough for it's massive wingspan but it's too beautiful to be stuck in a corner somwhere. First off let me tell you that I have been dealing with Robert Chumley for almost 3 years now. There is NOBODY and I mean NOBODY that will treat you better on the price, or has more experience with the Taitungensis. He has grown literally MILLIONS of them. Now, my opinion on King vs Emperor. To me, there is no comparison. The Emperor is 100% a better cycad to have. It is REALLY puzzling to know why all the stores like Wal Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. continue to sell Kings, when Taitungensis are by far a better cycad. The Taitungensis grows much much faster. Mr. Chumley once told me that if you cut the leafs off a Taitungensis, new flush will occur around 23 days later. So if you were so inclined, you could get a good 1' growth out of one pretty darn quick. The Taitungensis is the fastest growing cycad in the world (althou my personal finding is the the Nova Wilailik is a very close second). The Taitungensis is also one the hardiest cycads. The leaves on a Taitungensis will continue to grow at it's lowest temps, where as a King's leafs will go doormant. The Taitungensis is also IMO a much prettier cycad than the King, With it's longer petiols.

Cycas revoluta are grown as bonsai so being root-bound is tolerated and can slow down growth substantially but that does not mean the plant cannot be kept healthy.

If a year goes by and a flush never happens or the leaves are fewer and/or smaller, or you notice that you are watering more often than previously, it might be time to repot, but just like any other slower growing plant, every 2-3 years or so is probably a good idea if you want to maintain good growth.

I get at least two flushes a Summer here in Kansas, and there has been two or three that I got three flushes out. However I do throw cow manure on them about once a month which I think helps A LOT!
