Fall Webworms

I knew that my 20ft River Birch had a starting of fall webworms, but figured they wouldn't do too much damage. Wrong!

I went out the door this morning and found my lovely tree almost completely encapsulated with webs-and-nearly defoliated by these nasty worms.

First I got a long stick and poked holes in their webs, and dragged as many down as I could reach. Well, that didn't get all of them, so then I tried blasting the webs with a high pressure hose from my well.

That did seem to sort of 'glue' the webs together. But I still wanted to kill the darn things. So, next, I got a ladder and a sprayer with BT in it, and leaned the ladder up against the house and went to it.

Hopefully between the BT spray and opening the webs so the birds can get to them, I may have conquered the problem.

Right now, I feel pretty disgusted that I had to spend part of my beautiful morning battling these gross worms.
