Broken Branch on my Plumeria cutting

Hi,

I'm new here and also to growing Plumerias. I have a question about a broken branch. The cutting arrived in the mail and unfortunately I was so excited about getting it that I broke one of the branches off when I pulled it out of the box. It had two branches and only the one broke. Will a new branch develop there where the old one broke off, and will it be possible to root the broken branch along with the original cutting?

I would appreciate any help with this. Needless to say, I have learned to be more careful when opening my shipments.

How big is the branch that cut off? If its over 6 inches it shouldnt be a problem to root as a cutting. A new branch probably will not grow where the old one broke unless it didnt break right against the main stem (in other words there is still some of the broken branch still attached to the plant). Dont worry though. The branch that is not broken will continue to grow normally and eventually (usually when it flowers), it will re-branch.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I measured the broken branch, and it measures about 7 inches. So I'm going to try to root it. First I need to get some rooting hormone though. The branch broke off right in the v where the two branches came off of the main stalk. So I guess there won't be any new branches coming out of that area. Oh well, the good news is that maybe I will have two Aztec Gold's now.

From the info I've gathered lately, you should strip all the leaves and figs, then cut into 6"-8" sticks. Refrigerating is fine until spring, or you can attempt to root the cuttings in a bag now, but you will have to keep them with enough humidity/heat throughout the winter. Hope this helps!

Dear Friends, The tree in this thread grew from a cutting I brought back from Maui about 8 years ago. I've kept it alive and reasonably well even in this relatively-cold clime, though it has been plagued, each winter, by spider mites. Due to the climate and the mites, it has only bloomed once, long ago. Then last year the branch was broken that gave rise to this thread and the things I've learned here have helped me make my plumeria a much happier plant. The result is that it is blooming! In addition, I have two cuttings, both of which are putting out new leaf spikes (though I've seen no roots yet and am following directions until I do). So I wanted to share them with you, who have done so much to help make it happen. Thanks again for your time and energy and knowledge and encouragement! Hi there! Leaving the full intact branch there won't hinder new branch production from the cut branches. New branches grow from old leaf nodes under the cut so the only thing that may stop it from branching there is if that cut branch is dead / hollow then it is not alive anymore. I would probably carefully cut it back to a point where you can seal it with DAP or something similar to protect from rot / shrink back on that branch as well as the main trunk and hope there is still enough of a branch there / nodes to push new branches. Same with the other cut if it's doing the same thing. Congrats to you for being able to grow them in Alaska! Your new sunroom sounds fantastic and I bet your plumeria will love it!! Other people will probably chime in with advice as well, and please keep us posted on what happens!

When it blooms it will branch, or if has enough energy it will pop out a branch. For either to happen it has to be healthy. Are you fertilizing?
