Hole in trunk of young Adonidia Palm

I have a 5 foot Adonidia Palm (Veitchia merrillii), also known as Christmas Palm and Manilla Palm. In the developing trunk which is about 3 feet from the ground is a hole about 2 inches wide and three inches long in the vertical axis of the trunk. I discovered it about 3 months ago. There were a lot of ants in the hole. I flushed it out with water and let it dry. I then filled it with silicon caulk which may have not been the best thing to do but I wanted to fill the void so the ants would not return. Now three months later the hole is getting bigger as the palm is growing well. The silicon plug is now loose and falling out. Any suggestions on what to use to plug the hole and care for this otherwise healthy palm? By the way, I live in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area. Thanks.
