It appears that the majority of my cuttings have rooted, including the ones with the inflos. Most have a few leaves too. There's resistance when I gently tug. That's the only indicator I use to see if I have roots, that and growth. I never dig around in the pot. I'm hesitant to bring them outside. They've been doing so well on the seed mat and I don't want the inflos to wither. I have no reservations about the cuttings without inflos but I've never dealt with cuttings that had them before. I usually have to wait until the second season for flowers when I root cuttings.

Oh oh- here comes that mother hen. Patience, Patience, Patience. First, do not tug on a new cutting until it has been in the ground for 3 months. Growing leaves are what you look for. Tugging early will tear tender new roots and set back your plant. Second year plants are no problem. Also realize that because of the famous May gray and June gloom, Southern California is slower getting started than the Southwest or Florida. Next, are your plants in light? I would put them outside in the day and back on the mat at night until the nights are above 60. The sunlight is needed to get the leaves going and to run the photosynthesis that powers the plant. So Bill what you are saying is if I have a green house of sorts I should take my cutting out durning the day for the sun? Holly Moley... LOL When will I ever get this correct.... I did put everybody out today in the green house and just had to make a mad dash for it looks like rain now... Not suppose to but shoot is black and windy... so my babies went back inside...

Silver Maples grow that way and are being outlawed in some provinces in Canada. They have very far-reching root systems which are very shallow and reach for the nearest source of water. They will destroy swimming pools and the foundations of houses. In a very few years these little saplings will be large whopping tress with as many as nine large braches. They will split, that is their nature. It cost us about $3,000.00 over 3 years to get ours taken down and the roots are still visible in the grass. So if you have no buildings or swimming pools nearby let them be. They make very good shade trees but are dangerous in ice-storms because they will come down. Your rocker is a mid-Victorian (or repro) lady's rocker-- hard to tell from the photos if it is of the era. It looks like it might be mahogany or walnut. These rockers are usually very comfortable. Very worth cleaning and fixing up! Victorian is not terribly popular right now, so enjoy it until it regains its value. The barley-twist table is later Victorian. It's pretty bashed up and looks like it is missing a lot of veneer on top. On the other hand, it's an attractive form and has the wonderful claw feet gripping glass marbles. It would be quite project to restore it ... but would be an eye-catcher if you did. The drum table might be easily restored using something like Howard's Restor-A-Finish. Did the top originally have leather? Or could we have a better shot of it? I think the Hepplewhite/French sofa would look better with an untufted back. Is it in good structural shape? If so, it might be a good project for learning upholstery. It's a very pleasing shape. Interesting chest! Does the top open on both sides? It could be a home handyman special, although the feet are rather refined. I'd refinish it rather than painting it. The Duncan Phyfe style sofe is most likely a repro -- the carving isn't very sophisticated. This is the only one I'd be even remotely interested in painting. But reupholstering it would probably cost much more than it's worth.

If you're going to replace your countertops, wait to tile after the new ones are installed. Otherwise if you don't wait, your tile can get damage PLUS you'll have a gap between the existing tile and new countertop. Another point to make is that if you replace you countertop with a different material, like granite or quartz, there will be differences in the thickness of the countertop, which will effect things as well. You'll get a better fit and less hassle if you replace your top, then tile. Also, if you're cost conscious, its more expensive to custom fit a new back splash underneath existing tile. Red Velvet Echeveria--should I or shouldn't I?

First time I heard of this name, did a quick check online and it is a new variety of Echeveria pulvinata with redder leaves. For me, E. pulvinata is very easy to grow and easy to propagate, and it is not the rossette type, more shrubby-like.

The dragging in and out is just too much of a hassle for me. Once they're out, they're out. Our evening temps are up around 60. I'm just afraid of losing the inflos. I'll probably end up keeping them inside for a few more weeks but it would be nice to finally get that seed mat off the floor. It's a 10 flat sized mat so it takes up a significant amount of space.

Speaking of tugging on recently rooted plants I hope my husband didn't hurt my AG. It's a good size cutting that I rooted last fall that's now out by the pond. It's about 3' tall with 3 big branches. My husband was doing something with the filter and he picked it up by the trunk to move it. I really hope the roots didn't rip. I gave it some B1 and ST and put it in a shady place. It's well rooted but not well enough to withstand being picked up like that : (

Karyn I hope you gave him a good smack on the side of his head. LOL. I've been wondering too about what to do with my ACW that I have had rooting. I have it on a seed mat under a lamp and to me it looks wonderful. It's got a few nice leaves starting to open up. Part of me wants to put it out in my little green house, but since it is doing so well thinking I should leave well enough alone for now. As long as it looks good I am happy. Wondering a good and safe way to know if it has good strong roots growing.

Once you have a few nice big leaves you can be relatively sure that you have roots. I have had a cutting that was full of foliage that suddenly stopped growing. When I finally decided to see what was going on I found there were no roots. Maybe it had them and something in the soil either ate or rotted them, don't know but that plant eventually died. I don't go digging around unless I haven't seen any growth in a few months or unless something strange is going on, like the cutting I just mentioned. I do gently tug to check for resistance after I've had foliage develop. I guess I shouldn't do that but I haven't hurt anything ....yet. lol So I won't recommend tugging on the cutting, just watch the growth. I'm just anxious to get them outside so I can put away my seed mat and turn off the HID lights. The lights were great in the winter when it was cold but they generate so much heat. Even with the AC running 24/7 it still heats up the entire room to an uncomfortable temperature. Like you said they are looking so good, I'm hesitant to change anything. I have a few cuttings on a seed mat upstairs but that one is a one flat mat with no supplemental lighting so they aren't a problem.

Before everyone freaks out- I knew Karen did not have a greenhouse and I wanted to make sure it was not on a heat mat in the house with miminum light. She is in the Valley and should be warm enough for intoducing to outside.
Karyn- your AG should be ok as after 8-10 months the roots should be well developed although I am usually careful up to about 12-15 months. Those of you with greenhouses need to deal with moving plants from one environment (the house) to another (the greenhouse) and then to the outside. Plumies can be shocked so transitions are best done a little bit at a time. Much is really common sense. Plumerias take several years to grow strong roots but their root systems are still fragile compared to other trees. Bill
