Granite countertops, should I or shouldn't I?

I was having a discussion with my installer about my backsplash tile. I have decided on a beveled white subway tile, I love the texture of it and how clean it looks. Only thing is that he told me if I ever want to replace my countertops, the tile would may be damaged for the install. So maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it now? Currently I have a creamy colored corian, other than being kind of 'blah' there is nothing wrong with it. Do people buy used countertops?

I would think so on Craigslist..... Do you have anywhere you could still use them such as a crafts room, laundry room or for a workspace somewhere?

If you were planning to replace the counters at some point, I would definitely do it before you do BS....most pick out counter first, then match BS to counter and cabs...so I would hold off buying tile until you decide on counter as the white subway you like may not be the right match for your granite. I would also try to sell old counter on CL...and if they dont sell, donate to Restore.

Not much learning curve. You'll love the convection once you have a chance to use it. You can lessen the time it takes something to bake/roast by 25%. Preheat with convection always, even if you aren't using it to bake something like a delicate cake. (My oven preheats using convection in 12-15 minutes, depending on how high I need it to be.) Don't use convection if you're baking bacon, or your oven is dirty when you want to high heat roast. It's not true that everything bakes more evenly. You still have to check and turn your sheet pans for even baking/roasting, depending on where they are positioned in your oven. Go for it. You may decide you don't like stainless after having to clean the front of it for a while, and this would be the thing to try it on. It will still blend in with the rest of your kitchen. I suspect you're gonna LOVE the oven, once you get acquainted with it!

fallingwaters; first of all, know that your you and your dh, and his hea lth care prov iders are in my prayers. Your priorities are in the right place, although I know there is some disappointment after getting so much in place for the renovation. I, too, put off my kitchen for a year. My MIL fractured her hip and was having repeated complications, my husbands workload increased at work and by being the primary healthcare surrogate for his mom. I sensed that just having the stress of ripping out the kitchen -- but also of not HAVING a functional kitchen, was a bit more than our family could deal with. My kitchen is a place of respite, even if in it's current state it isn't perfect. My experience has been like needssometips and jreuter. I saved up some more $$. I'm not putting that extra into the kitchen, but it is giving us a bit more of a cushion. 2. I've gotten just about every wee decision made, down to the gar bage di sposal, and what I'm lining the drawers with. Except for the darn faucet. Still trying to figure it out. In the next few months as you go thru this with your husband, there will likely be times when you feel out of control. Looking at pulls and such and making a few decisions unrelated to the health aspects may help you get a feeling of control back. And in the middle of the night, when you can't sleep, no doubt someone has posted a tittilating post (I know that isn't spelled right) that may take your mind off the stressors for a few minutes.

Thanks for all the responses - this really helps. The buyers are only interested in our property because it abutts their parents backyard. It's a one of a kind situation for them. We are building a house and our timelines are a bit flexible. The builder will speed things up if we sell quickly, or vice versa. I'm leaning toward ruling out the Hubbard but countering with a longer window to close - as much as 6 months. We could close on the new house without the sale of this one if we had to. At least this option would shine a light at the end of the tunnel. Do you think this is a feasible option?

The older Gaggenau ovens are 27" wide. The current ones are 30". both are standard sizes. Mine is from the first group of 30" and the interior front to back will hold a 16" pizza pan, but barely. I don't know if the current model has the same conformation. They also make a classic 36" oven, though they have recently updated it. Gaggenau is one of the most accurate ovens on the market, though you pay for it. People here are happy with the side opening Bosch, which has a more accessible price. Bosch used to have the biggest cavity, but I don't know if that's also true for the side opening one. Definitely worth checking out. I'll say again, GE's ovens have a poor reputation. Uneven heating and other control issues. Look at the AR and BS. Before you get too set on any kind of flexible surface induction cooktop, do read the manuals really really thoroughly. There are limits to the "anywhere you want", the amount of power delivered, etc. It's very different technology to the standard inductor rings--I didn't realize that's what you were talking about before--and I would definitely not go with Viking on that. Not without a lot of other guinea pigs reporting that it's great and that the customer service is also great if something fails. If you think you really want it, AEG (I think it's now part of Electrolux) and Siemans (BSH=Bosch, Thermador and Gaggenau here) are the companies that have been in it longest. I don't think AEG is offered in the USA. That leaves Thermador and Gaggenau to look at. You might like the new Gaggenau 36" which has two "freedom" panels on the sides and a big multiple ring in the center. I think you could do three of your big pots across--do read the manual to be sure, but I think you can power share the front and back zones with one big pot in the middle of a freedom, which I think is four oblong inductors. But, again, you pay for it. Modern dishwashers are very different from your old Kenmore. They're designed for energy and water savings first, and cleaning second, ease of use third and drying a lag behind. Most people love Miele--mid-range on up. It's not as big, but genuinely loved. Most DWs are pretty good. Find one that fits your loads, and it'll probably be okay. Most of the work now, is done by enzymes in the detergent, rather than heat or power, and most machines require rinse aid (surfactant to loosen the water) for drying. Not spot prevention, but to actually get your dishes dry.

Yes, you can sell or donate corian. Some charities will even pick it up.

I donated all my kitchen cabinets and corian counter top to restore and will be able to take a write off on taxes. They also came to the house and picked everything up.

If you're going to replace your countertops, wait to tile after the new ones are installed. Otherwise if you don't wait, your tile can get damage PLUS you'll have a gap between the existing tile and new countertop. Another point to make is that if you replace you countertop with a different material, like granite or quartz, there will be differences in the thickness of the countertop, which will effect things as well. You'll get a better fit and less hassle if you replace your top, then tile. Also, if you're cost conscious, its more expensive to custom fit a new back splash underneath existing tile.

You could probably donate your tops to your local Habitat for Humanity.

ao34, were you thinking about replacing your countertops before the tile installer mentioned it? Sometimes it's easy to get sucked in to thinking we should do something new and different, but when we step back, we realize it's just fine the way it is.

Realistically, how long do you think you could live with your existing countertops? Would you make other changes to the kitchen at the same time? It's very possible that by the time you were to change counters, you would be ready to change the backsplash as well. Hardly anything in our kitchens is permanent!

Those counters look pretty good to me. I'd keep them, and keep some extra tiles to repair the backsplash down the line, should you eventually want to change them.

Evern If you decide to change your countertop now, are the cabinets "new" enough to compliment the new counter top?

From the photo, it seems the counter top and cabinets are good. If it is true, adding BS could give you more years of enjoyment from your exising kitchen, until you either move or replacing both countertop and cabinets.

You should surely opt for the granite countertop .Keeping in mind the hardness of granite,go for the darker color as the hardness of granite depends on the color. The darker the granite the stronger and more dense the stone.
