Will Velcro keep slugs off my barrels?

Slugs continue to be a problem in my Vermont garden. I use slug traps filled with the least expensive beer I can buy, but am not always around to empty and refill them when necessary. And I must confess to great pleasure when I salt a slimy creature who ventures into my view.

It occurred to me today, as I planted arugula, basil, and impatiens in my two ex-whisky barrels, that perhaps running a strip of black self-adhesive Velcro -- either the soft side or the bristly side -- around the barrel might prevent the slugs from climbing up for a meal. They might not like the texture of the Velcro and go elsewhere. Has anyone ever tried this?
