Can pumpkins 'bake' while still on the vine?

We've harvested 6 nice size pumpkins in the last 10 days. The largest is 16.6 lbs! The others are 8 to 10 lbs. One of the 3 from today's harvest has brown spots.....on the top side that gets the sun. They're not defined like a disease might look, but rather the color and look of the peeling when it's baked. So I thought maybe with this heat, the sun started "baking" them before I could. The vines don't appear to have any bugs or disease...but could this be one? I searched the forum and didn't find anything like this. Maybe I'm being too dramatic...but I wanted these for fall decorating, pumkin butter and pies! Going to make for a stange looking jack-o-lantern.

One has "dents" where it was laying on vines, so we're going to make him up to look like a pirate with scars. We never could get out there with the grandkids to carve their names like Dawn suggested, darn it! We were always busy picking and never had something to carve with.

Thought I'd ask this as Gamegird might find it on some of his too. Anybody?
