i think this is a needle palm or european?same dealership

same restaurant on highway 220 near asheboro

i thought this police car was cool lol

Very nice! How could do you get in the winter? The palm in that pic was a european fan palm and a very healthy one at that!

hey alex,i think in the winter months we average 50's in nov to high 40's in jan through feb,but in march it warms up pretty quick

Hi Joann, I don't know much about SC but I live in zone 7 in NM. Some of the plants that do well here and come up faithfully every year are: canna, iris, four o'clocks, roses, sedums. I'm sure there are a lot more, but I have personal experience with these. I have mixed yellow & pink four o'clocks and some semi-dwarf (3-4ft) canna with a yellow bloom sprinkled with red that I'd be willing to trade if you're interested. I'm interested in liriope, angels trumpet, or even a small palm. I have a greenhouse so I can over-winter them there if I need to. Thanks, Denise/plantlady35

I have my queen palm since 2004 and it has gone through a lot of neglect and still pulled through so I can definitely say they are strong plants (but look best when treated well). My queen palm has seen temperatures around 22F-24F with some damage (the duration of the cold was brief though since it was March when it saw those temperatures). I've considered planting my queen palm in the ground for a few years now, but they can get pretty large as potted plants and they are light palms so they can be moved around from place to place and brought inside pretty easily. Eventually I may plant mine in the ground since it's over 10 feet and getting larger every year, but hopefully I can keep it potted for a few more years. I heard that there are greenhouses on Long Island where you can send your potted plants for the winter and bring them back to your home for the spring. I dont know anything about it but if they do exist, then you should definitely consider that! Good luck! -Alex

If you want to try to add some new palms, I definitely also recommend livistonia and Arenga engleri (aka dwarf sugar palm) for your zone. They are both rated for a zone 9a (livistonia is actually very tolerant of a zone 8b) and I dont think they would have a problem at all during the average winter, and they should be able to handle the high teens when established albeit with a lot of damage if the cold lasts for long durations. A pindo is a great palm to strech the zone and so are queens, washys, dates, and a lot of others. Its great to have a lot of room to plant in, but I guess it probably can get a little overwhelming to plant in such a large landscape because there is SOOOO much room. But it gives you a great chance to make your own private botanical garden with winding paths, seating, and a huge tropical canopy of palms and tropical trees and vines! But thats a lot of money and work to do at once so its great to start with a few beautiful and cold tolerant palms. I do love to see natives too so the sabals are a great family of palms to grow! Nice pics. The palms looked well too! A friend who live in Reigh-Durham NC s there are no palms at all there.

ALthough we had a lot of snow this winter in NYC our temps were not so bad - our lowest temp was 12-14*F

Great pics! Brooklyngreg, I have to correct you about Palms in Raleigh. There are most definitely palms in Raleigh and quite a few. I have not seen SABAL Palmettos there, but there are plenty of needle, S. minor, and large windmill palms there. Visit Pullen Park, and there are about 6 or so very tall, mature windmills and lots of needles and S. Minor. I've been down there many many times and always go to Pullen park just to look and enjoy the tropical feel. Raleigh is similar to Richmond VA in climate, but it IS warmer during winter. Not as warm as VA Beach, but not quite as cold as Richmond, VA either. Oh, and the Trachy's there that I know of grow unprotected year round.
