Wow.

I don't have the whole states stats, but we're at 48 consecutive days over 100 here, so I would imagine we're certainly helping to raise the average.

We saw that on CBS News tonight. The average for July was 89.1 degrees. That's not exactly a record you want to set, is it.

Scot, you heard it right. And if I heard it right, we held the previous record, and broke our own record.

And the last record was July of 1954. I remember that summer so well. I was 7 years old living in Miami, probably not the hottest part of the state, but without AC....well. Mom put a fan next to our beds and sprinkled the sheets with the sprinkling bottle she used to sprinkle clothes before she ironed them. It took a couple years but by the time I was 9 we were in Seattle and lived for the next 9 years without AC, or screens on our windows.

That you guys would hold the record does not surprise me, nor that it was your own record that you broke. Arizona has mountains and has desert nighttime cool downs to pull their soaring temps down to size and much of their state are in the mountains and are considerably cooler than Phoenix. Texas has the gulf to pull down temps a titty tad and desert to the west where night time temps are normally cooler. When you get your heat waves going , you can translate a normal texas high ridge zone into a thing of pure hell, yet you maintain some humidity to prevent much of a cool down at night. So here you have A Texan full of Texan hot air concurring,......... You beat us . You guys are HOT.

And we Okies get a huge amount of pleasure out of beating Texas in any category whatsoever, be it weather .... football .... you name it! LOL :-)

It's official then, Oklahoma is hotter'n hell!

Yeah, took my husband and I a few minutes to figure it out. But, if you consider we have areas like Flagstaff and Showlow at 7500 feet, where you don't even have AC units in the houses, it makes sense. Now, if you want to compare between cities like Yuma/Phoenix and OKC it probably wouldn't even be close. When we get cooking, we get highs in the mid-one-teens and lows in the nineties for weeks on end, which can easily make average temps in the mid-nineties.
But, glad you won. You deserved it for all you went through. Now, straighten up before I move there and get back to normal!

Like some of you said, basically there is just no place to hide here when it's hot. Other states have coastal areas or higher elevations to moderate the overall average.

I still consider DFW to be one of the worst places to live during the hottest half of the year. There is no place an hour or two away to go to get a break from it. The heat seems to last forever with little break. Plus the lack of rainfall is a lot more common there. I really like the overall Tulsa climate, although there are things I really liked about DFW.

Here is what happens normally. I look north and see green globs floating across your state and hear that YES a cool down has given you Okies some respite and it will never reach us till late September (if we are lucky). I will live vicariously and dream of a cool night.

On Tuesday we were out at a very serious and prolonged fire. By the time I arrived on the scene with bottled water, Gatorade and wet towels, some paramedics and firefighters were standing there taking their own pulse and removing themselves from the fire scene because they were so hot it was not safe for them to continue fighting the fire at that time. That's a first---for them to be that hot that fast. I've never seen so many firefighters at one fire on the brink of heat exhaustion, but they were smart and pulled themselves away from the fire for rehab before they went back to fight the fire some more.

Anyhow, after a long, miserable fire experience during which every Rehab person on the scene ran out of Gatorade, ice and water and had to go get more, we came home and learned on the 10 p.m. news that two Oklahoma cities tied for the hottest spot in the nation that day, with official highs of 112 degrees. Those two were Waurika and Marietta, and some of us here in Marietta actually had 115 degrees on some of our personal and non-official thermometers.

Yesterday our guys were out fighting fires in "only" 108-110 degree temps, so it was a bit better, and today should be better still.

Wantonamara, I always say that my weather here just north of Gainesville usually is more like that in Dallas than that in OKC, and this week I wish we were having Dallas's temps or OKC's temps because we've been hotter than both!

Scott, You remember the summer of 1980 in Dallas, right? Well, here in Marietta we've now tied their streak of 42 consecutive days of 100 degrees or higher as of yesterday. I'm not sure we'll match their streak for that year of total days of 100 or higher because I think we're only at 52 and they had 66 that year. However, the Oklahoma cooldown this week really hasn't reached us yet, although it might reach us today or tomorrow----our forecast is for 103, I think, instead of 108 or 110.

Tim and I really messed up when we moved here from Fort Worth---we found a place in Oklahoma that is hotter than Fort Worth in the summer and colder than Fort Worth in the winter. Clearly we were much younger and stupider then and weren't even thinking about the weather! I love it here anyway, but sure am ready for Mother Nature to give us a break.

Rain would be really nice too. We had storms Tuesday but they mostly just brought us lightning and strong winds We've been stuck at 12" of rain this year for ages, and I sure would like to see that number go up a bit. Like maybe up to 30 or 40-something inches (not all in one day, lol).
