chewed leaves on buddleia

I originally posted this on the Butterfly Board, but no one has answered so I'm trying here.

All my buddleia have chewed leaves. The leaves look really terrible, all holes and rough edges. It's not Japanese beetles, they just arrived and seem to stick to the flowers. (And they aren't here in full force, my hibiscus and roses are untouched so far).

What insect would be causing this? I've been checking for over a week and can't seem to catch anyone in the act. The flowers don't look great either, they are just starting to open and are just not looking healthy.

Anyone have ideas on what this could be?

Because you can't see anything during the day, I suggest you look at 10 PM or so with a flashlight. The game is Search-and-Destroy!

Grasshoppers are usually the culprit for me when some plant has been chowed down. Can't say that I have seen them eating my butterfly bush though.

More than likely that is from the larva of one of many insects, or maybe even the adults. Are there wee green colored thingys on the underside of the leaves? Do you see any insects on the plant at all?

Here is a pic. Leaf damage on the leaves looks the same on all, but here's a good pic of the inky substance. I caught some slugs on my pole beans yesterday AM after a soggy night, but they are a solid 30 feet away from the peppers. Don't hornworms leave poop that is clumpy? Not just a liquid? I sprinkled Sevin dust last week, didnt seem to work. If it's a catepillar, I guess Sevin wouldn't be the answer anyways. This post was edited by peps22 on Fri, Jul 18, 14 at 7:32

Deciduous azaleas like Lemon Lights are difficult to root from cuttings under the best of conditions. Leafless cuttings would be pretty much impossible. Unless you're experiencing severe drought, there's no reason to wait until October to move your plant. Even if conditions are quite dry, you can move now if you're willing to do the necessary watering. In a cold zone like 5a, you want to give the plant as much time as possible to establish its roots before the onset of cold weather. Moving now or waiting until next spring would be better than doing it in October.
