suggestions for a tree for a tough spot

I'm looking for suggestions for a small (15-20 ft) deciduous

attractive tree for a tough site.

The location is on the north side of my house, which is the front of

the house. Being on the north side, in the winter it is cold, and

shady close to the house. But in the summer, it gets the afternoon

and late afternoon sun. The spot is sheltered, being next to the

neighbor's garage wall (east of the tree, and illuminated by the sun

also), and there is little air circulation. So, it really gets hot

there, especially in the last two summers, and plants just cook.

Currently, I have a redbud planted there. This tree was planted

spring of 2011 when the landscaping went in. Naturally it suffered

during that summer, and what apparently happened is that the south

side of the whole trunk has died. The tree is still alive and is

trying to grow around the dead part (like trees do when you cut off a

branch) but I can't believe that this tree will ever be robust and I

am inclined to replace it. I was thinking to replace it with a redbud

(this is the type of tree that I want there) but I have been reading

that this is an understory tree, and so may not do well in this harsh

spot.

Any suggestions? Try another redbud, but planting in the fall so it

will get a better start? Or try something else?
