You know, the NWS could just issue one big blanket Heat Advisory/Excessive Heat Warning each Sunday for the rest of the week because we all know it is hot.

The current Excessive Heat Warning for the NE OK area is in effect through Tuesday and the Heat Advisories for most of the rest of the state are in effect through Monday evening. I expect all of them likely will be extended throughout the rest of the week or will be replaced by new advisories, watches and warnings.

Please remember that the long-term effect of the heat is cumulative and protect your pets, animals and family members accordingly.

I worked in the garden for two hours very early today...going out just at sunrise...and it was a miserable experience.

I'll feeling nostalgic for those lovely snowey days we had back in the winter. Wouldn't some cold wind and snow feel really nice today?

As usual, the advisories, watches and warnings can be seen on the linked webpage of the NWS. Really, though, we can cut through all the official NWS language and say it simply: It is dangerously hot.

Oh, no, Dawn, not cold wind and snow!! Just stepping out into a cool morning with just the tiniest whiff of fall in the air is all I need to get remotivated again. Everything I do right now is such a CHORE..........

I CAN'T STAND IT!! I am so hot that...I can't think of anything bad enough. I went to get some work done at my office and after 2 1\2 hours I had to leave because the a\c couldn't cool it down enough to breathe.

I can't remember cool..a vague memory of white stuff everywhere some months ago, but brain too fried to quite draw it up to memory.

Does anyone have a site with a long term forecast that will say it will get cooler in the near future?

What a fascinating experience! Raw camel liver ----eeeuuuu! How awful. Salt in food is bad for us, and as I understand it, salt tablets are also bad. Actually the athletes in my classes say that even Gatorade or sports drinks are bad for you unless you are actually involved in the sports at the time you are drinking them. (I teach in a high school, and allow the kids to bring water to class. We have this debate yearly when they want to bring in Gatorade, and I refuse. I don't want the sugar on the carpet, but they explain to each other what is healthful and what is not.) I think tea is good for us, but for me I cannot drink tea as fast as room temperature water, so I can replace fluids much more quicky and efficiently with water than with iced tea. I hope you continue to post. I am not a medical person at all, and certainly do not have all the answers, but try to keep current. I know that drinking water is very important, and for me, when I begin to sweat too much, I can stop the sweating by pressing cold water on my face. We had a drop in temperature yesterday for the first time in probably about 3 weeks. I am not too appreciative since my school starts Monday (for teachers) and I will not have much freedom to work outside now. Sammy

Well, it looks like the 38 was as low as it got. Just checked my digital weather station and the next couple of nights were in the low 40Âs. All the herbs and other potted plants look okay, although the petunias in my tree rose pots look kind of spent. Will move the citrus trees back out onto the deck today to give them more light and air circulation. solana, I used to listen to EotS a lot. Now, I go to the National Weather Service website and read their text forecast discussions. Reports written by meteorologists for other meteorologists, so thereÂs a lot of unique jargon and abbreviations, but it provides an unembellished discussion of the weather. No ads or commercials, either, a fine example of our tax dollars at work. suenh, the chickens are almost fully feathered, so IÂll be taking the light out this week. I did the standard Âdrop five degrees per weekÂ until they feathered out. HavenÂt had to turn on the heat or fire up the wood stove, yet, although itÂs probably a good idea to at least do the latter to make sure everything is working as intended. Had some heather plants delivered from Rock Spray while I was away that I need to get into the ground ASAP. ItÂs 73 outside and the sun is out from behind the clouds. Ahh - New plant disease. LOL I almost did the same thing, but not with peppers. I have a newly planted salad bed that I stuck a few of my transplants into and planted seed in the rest. A few days later, I could see little green things all over it. Well some of the lettuces had started to come up and were teeny, tiny, but the rest was something blowing in from the neighbors tree. It was bright green and in tiny little pieces. Thanks for the pepper info. I was hoping that they would be a small plant, but was afraid they would not be. I think there are going to be some crowded plants in my garden this year. I wish seed companies would put the size of the fruit or other edible part of the plant AND the 'average' size of the plant on seed packages. It would certainly make planning easier.....and I HATE, HATE, HATE generic seed packages. If it weren't for the internet we probably wouldn't know what we were planting. LOL Actually I don't mind the Thompson and Morgan method of a generic package inside the 'picture pack'. I think the foil pack may also protect for a little longer. It looks like a good business decision to me since you don't have to use colored and expensive printing to print packs for things that never make it to the shelf. Just stuff the pack as your inventory needs require. With the date stamped on the inside pack only, you could use the same outside pack for years, but only pay printing costs for the ones you really sell or display. I think maybe the Brits got it right on that one. LOL I had two tomato plants outside last night. One was in a container and covered with a milk jug with the cap off and the bottom cut out. I slid it under a glass top table for the night, and the other was in the center of a huge container with a window across the top. The window didn't cover the top of the pot, but did help to shield the plant a little. Everything here looks good but it still feels cool at 48 degrees. I need to go pull my 'tomato wagons' out into the sun. Just as I was typing this the temp jumped to 50 so I guess the peppers get to come out also. We're walking, walking, walking. I need to go move a few more from their tiny blocks to a pot. I'm almost done with that task, but I am getting some pepper seed in the mail this week and I know I will have to plant a few of those. Do I need them? No, of course not, but they will be pretty in the garden. LOL

Nancy, It is just a sad fact of life that heat + lack of moisture give our hot peppers better flavor, and cooler temperatures and excessive moisture do just the opposite. There's not a lot we can do about it. I am careful to choose peppers that are higher on the Scoville Heat Unit scale for just this reason. While this sometimes means that hot peppers harvested in July and August in hot, dry years can be almost unbearably hot, it also means that those harvested in cooler, wetter months still have a lot of heat since I chose hotter varieties to begin with. I'll even tailor my variety choices to the year's expected weather (to the extent that you can know at seed-starting time what sort of summer to expect). If I expect really hot, dry summer, I may choose jalapenos with a lower SHU and do the opposite if I expect a cooler, wetter summer. It helps somewhat. Deer are just that way. They want what they want when they want it. You can jazz up ham and cheese sandwiches by spreading a thin layer of Habanero Gold Jelly on them! Of course, this only works if you happen to have Habanero Gold Jelly handy. Jen, Whatever your pepper is, I don't recognize it and it didn't come from me. Could it possibly me one of the ornamental pepper varieties? It stayed cool, cloudy and mostly rainy---just a slow, even rain that fell all day long until 4 or 5 pm---all day long and the high temperature here only made it up to 66 degrees. It felt like autumn after feeling like summer for far too long. We ended up with 5.8" of rain, so certainly cannot complain about the rain missing us this time. I think the last time we had 5.8" of rain from one rain event, even a multi-day rain event, likely was back in February. It is nice to see all the moisture, but I'm sure the mud and the puddles will get old quickly, and the mosquito explosion will not be welcome at all. We usually have mosquitoes all winter here, so it isn't like we even can count on cold weather to knock back the population completely. I dread the mosquito part of the equation. We'll see if this large amount of rainfall heals up all the cracks in the ground from this summer's drought. I think it will and hope I'm right about that. My garden is a lake as the timbers from each raised bed sort of serve as mini-dams that hold water when there is plentiful rainfall. A lake is probably preferable to a desert after the summer we just had. One lone hummingbird was spotted visiting the feeders in the rain, and then seen visiting the trumpet creeper flowers after the rain stopped. This is the third day in a row to spot only one hummingbird. I don't know if it is the same one, staying here and refueling before flying further south, or if I'm seeing various single ones. So far the last few days, all the hummingbirds I've seen have been ruby-throated ones. The main crowd left a few days ago. The deer returned in force to feed tonight and were pretty hungry. I hope they enjoyed their dinner. At least I didn't have to drag out the water hose to fill up their waterer for them because the rain took care of it---it was, in fact, overflowing. They might not even drink from the waterer now that all the creeks and ponds have water in them again, but it is there if they need it. I'm thinking if an unwanted large predator is lurking, we'll know it soon enough because it likely will leave tracks in the mud if it comes anywhere near the house, garden, outbuildings or the deer feeding area. Vultures have been circling our woodland and Tim thinks this means some predator has killed and possibly cached its prey back there. I pointed out anything could have happened---just some wild thing could have died of natural causes---and we'd still have vultures circling. Neither of us is willing to venture into the snake-infested woods to see if we can find whatever it is that is attracting the vultures. If this was November and we'd had colder nights, venturing into the woods wouldn't be so risky, but we've been too warm recently and the snakes are still very active. Dawn

Watering every other day for two hours while my kids run wild. Earlyin the AM before it hits the daily 100+ (Many days 108).

I've been trying to figure out how long since it rained. I know the last time it rained here, there was a flood for days and I complained about it on this forum.

Other than searching for that post, I have no idea how to track it. Is there a site online that tells you the last date it rained by area?

Dave keeps telling me, "We're in Oklahoma. It's hot. It never rains. Get used to it".

Everyone around me has fried gardens but mine is still lush and green thanks to a billion man hours and ten million dollars worth of water ;). It's depressing and I feel bad for them. All that hard work...baked.

The title of this thread reminds me of an old Sonny & Cher song...although "heat" can easily be exchanged for the "beat".....

It's so hot outside....(here's where you say..."how hot is it???"....then I say....

it's SO hot I saw two trees fightin' over a dog that was walkin' by! (haha! hehe! futile attempt a heat humor)

Anyone else know any "how hot is it?" jokes?

I just looked up the post. July 7th we had the flood. So 4 1/2 weeks ago. I would have sworn it was two months.

It's so hot that...

The birds need potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

July 7th was a l-o-n-g time ago when you consider how hot and dry it has been.

You can look at the rainfall recorded for your county's Mesonet station by clicking on Rainfall on the left menu. (They just implemented the new screens last week so I'm still learning how to use themm, but when you click on More Maps, you get rainfall recorded in all kinds of ways...including the rainfall table I've linked below.

Our rainfall at our house is never exactly the same as the rainfall at Love County's mesonet station at Burneyville, but over the course of the year it averages out pretty closely and our rainfall for the year is usually within an inch or two either way of Burneyville's. I think your county's Mesonet station would be Tahlequah?

It is so hot here that......

....our hens are laying hard-boiled eggs

....the popcorn is popping itself in the garden

....we're eating habanero peppers to cool ourselves down.

I think Bixby is the closest station to Jenks...but they must have got some rain that missed us, because they have had 1" in the last month vs our big fat zero.

I keep track of our rain here at our house, but usually just in my head. So, I'll know we have had, say, 1" more than the closest Mesonet station or a half-inch less of whatever. Even though there is variation within the year, by the end of the year it is always just a difference of an inch or two, which is pretty amazing.

For years I tried writing down rainfall on my gardening calendar and keeping track of it, and I always start out keeping track of it really well, but somewhere along the way I start forgetting to record the rainfall and eventually I give up keeping track of it on paper.

I like the Mesonet maps because they give a great general picture of what is happening anywhere in our state's weather, even though none of us get exactly identical temps or rainfall or whatever.

As rough as the weather has been this summer, it is not even close to being the dryest summer we've had nor the hottest one. I guess there is some comfort in knowing that....we can say 'it could be worse'.......
