timing/ growth rates

i have just purchased about a dozen varieties of pepper seeds for this years garden. this is my first real pepper garden this year, and i've never grown any of these. i will be growing indoors until the weather is warm enough for them to go outside. i need to know which of these varieties i need to start first so they all will be big enough to handle mother nature, and get the most yeilds out of them all. which ones grow the slowest and take the longest to mature fully.

I see you got a lot of Chinense type peppers. They do take a long time to Mature. 100 days is typical. I started my Habaneros Feb 15 last year and decided that I was going to get them started in January this year (I am currently thinking that starting my Medusa Hybrids Jan. 7 was premature. They got buds and are going to be flowering in maybe a week! I am glad that I started my Habs early though).
With you being in Zone 7, I cannot see any reason to hold back starting the peppers (provided your indoor setup utilize Fluorescent lights or similar).

thank you, i'll start tring to germinate them now. hopefully i won't screw to many of them up, i'm terrrible at germinating seeds due to the fact that i don't have a heat pad and a good setup for that part. thanks again

Just can be how nature operates. I've had clones of trees within feet of each other, and had one die and one prosper. So seedlings that are genetically variable can easily do what you are seeing.

These are all pretty hardy. Below USDA 6 is where fall planting begins to become more limited. Geographic origin of stock not relevant, hardiness genetically determined. Stock being shipped from milder locations to colder can be a problem in spring, when new shoot growth is too advanced for northern conditions at that time. Mulch to retard freezing of soil. Roots don't grow that much in winter.

Hi Al, Sorry for the late reply. I forgot about this thread and I guess it dropped to page 2 or 3 where it wasn't very visable. I do recall reading something that cats are attracted to kiwi vines. Not sure, but do they just roll in it, or did the cat actually eat it? If so, I guess they must like the taste? For winter I really don't do anything special to my vine, but I do pile fresh newly fallen snow around and over the vine, then cover with a box, then pile more snow on that. You probably can forget the box thing, it's just me thinking to eliminate some of the wind around the vine, but if it's under snow there shouldn't be any wind. I did some research so sort of answered my own question. One source said the vine is only a moderate growing, to about 10 feet tall. Not the huge monster I thought, but still should fill in the area nicely. It also answered my pruning question, saying in the second or third year, to prune it and allow it to develop one main 'trunk'. Anyways, I am including a link to a website about growing the Arctic Beauty Kiwi. There are a few sites on the web, but this one's unique in that it covers growing it in a northern climate. I read this thread and kind of marvel. The effort people expend to grow plants in a hostile climate. I bought a $5 sago 40 years ago when I bought my house, it is over six feet tall The male flower is (like) two feet long, every year for at least the past 15 years. A flush consists of at least two dozen fronds , (or leaves) if you prefer. I have successfully raised and given away probably three dozen pups broken off from the parent plant. Most survive, maybe 80% but some don't. It gets cold here, we are at 1700 ft. elevation and freezes some years but I have never had a sago show damage from frost. Plumaria, that's another crap shoot, but the sagos do very well here. I have managed to keep twenty pups that are well established and in the ground. In other words, this climate is very agreeable for sagos and they are common all around here, seems like everybody has at least one? I'm not rubbing your nose in it here; I salute the effort to grow (what is almost a tropical), in a climate which is not suitable. Good luck. When I started ( many years ago) , I didn't use heat either and they germinated just fine--takes a little longer and that can be the problem. Trick is to keep the starting medium just moist and not sopping so the seeds don't rot before they germinate. A cover on your starting tray helps a bunch.

I've only done this 3 years. The first year I used a couple of jiffy-7 domes with pellets without a heat mat. I did have a 60 Watt bulb in a light fixture pretty close to the domes though. I had no problems germinating seeds with that setup either. In fact, I was surprised at how easy it was. I did have some problems with the Habaneros with the Coffee filter method though. But, a 1020 flat with dome and heat mat as a starter kit is only $25 or so. I bought one and I use that one exclusively. No longer any special cases. And, I don't really need any more than 1. I move the 9 seed flats out into a 1020 with light when I get 50-70% germination rate (5-6 plants have germinated out of 9). I can then replace that spot with some other plants. Most seeds only need a week and it's nice to spread the transplantation times into 1-3 weeks anyway. A starter kit with a 1020 flat, 809 inserts and a dome cannot be more than maybe $5. That's what I would start with if I started all over again (knowing what I know now).
