Spots on new Heuchera (coral bells)

I will post a couple pics ASAP tomorrow when I have some light, but this is really bugging me.

I was kinda in a hurry before work and purchased a Heuchera 'Marmalade' from local GH (wanted 'Caramel' but this was the closest in color). The leaf color was perfect for what place I had to fill. But I later noticed small, light brown spots on the surface of the amber-colored leaves while it rode shotgun in my car during errands. I turned them over and there are little whitish clumps formed on the underside of the leaves wherever a spot was there above. Anyone hear of or see this before? If so... what is it and how do I fix it?

I immediately put it in a somewhat quarantined place (away from other plants) and bought a Bayer "3 in 1" pest/fungal spray at work tonight hoping it would do the trick but not using it until I hear from some of you.

I tried searching the web, but most pictures of various diseases or pest problems doesn't fit the bill. And I learned that Heuchera is supposed to be pretty pest/disease resistant plant.

Maybe this is nothing (like the pollen on leaves of my peace lily, LOL), or maybe it's serious. I honestly don't know. It just looks very strange to me.

I would return the plant and the spray. I don't think you should have to go through the expense of treating a newly purchased plant. Let someone else buy the sick ones. Now you know to look closely for the most healthy ones.

I am not in favor of spraying a 3 in 1 pest/fungal spray unless you have all of those problems. Pest sprays kill good bugs too. Hope you work this out and enjoy your garden!

A few pictures of some of my favorites. Berry Smoothie Sugar Plum Southern Comfort Heucherella Brass Lanterns Heucherella Gunsmoke Heucherella Sweet Tea Seems to me good soil with lack of root competition plus some sun seems to do the trick for these plants, but mostly the soil. Below a link to more photos of my other heuchera plants. Some I have yet to take pictures of, they are on the recovery of a bad wet winter or animal damage, but are trying to grow back. I was in a bad place that year. My Mom was very sick and she passed the following year. When I got the second gift certificate as a sympathy gift from a friend I wanted to cry again. But I did post a negative on Garden Watchdog and they contacted me and are making it good. So their customer service was good. I have been gardening and ordering for 30 years and I have never had such a bad experience. Even with plants from Michigan Bulb and you know how bad they are. lol You said they were small this year, I am wondering if the positive was before the economy went down the toilet and they are rushing plants out the door before their time. I just feel they are one of the most expensive online nursery they should be larger and better plants. My order is coming in next week I will post pics. If they are going to start to send smaller plants they are going to lose good people like you.

I've had good luck with one I bought recently - Heuchera 'Key Lime Pie' - a gorgeous chartreuse. I loosened the soil away from the crown and pulled off small divisions right at the crown (they didn't have any roots attached) - actually the correct term would be basal cuttings, I guess. Anyway, I trimmed each cutting down to just a couple of the smaller, new leaves. I stuck them just deep enough to stand up in a peat:perlite mix and rooted them under intermittent mist, though you could probably use a plastic cover in the shade - anything to keep them moist. Mine took about 3 weeks to root - I got eleven out of the twelve I stuck. I will plant them out in the garden next spring. The mother plant has now grown back to about the same size it was before I took the cuttings, so am going to do some more. Heuchera Palace Purple is one that will come true from seed - you might try collecting seed.

What you see may be your plants reaction to what attacked it in the past. Do you continue to see more spots adding to the plant? There is no way to correct damage that already happened except to remove the leaf. One way to see if it is spreading is to remove the affected leaves and then keep watching it. But don't remove all of the leaves! Good Luck, Kim
