Flowers and New cactus

Lowes had cold hardy cactus. Some was labeled as cold hardy others were not. MOst were mislabeled and had fake flowers glued. Some said cold hardy to 20 degrees but that would not make it here, but I picked the hardy ones

Out of everthing I got everthing is hardy except for the purple one.

echeveria is flowering. i dug this one up last fall and took it in

Dioone spiunulosom flushing. These have grown extremly slow for me. None of the 4 I have flushed last year and this is the only one growing so far this year

I also had a sago palm survive 2 winters in the ground but it died this year because of rot

Someone seriously needs to fire the garden center buyers for our regional Lowe's and Home Depot stores. They have the absolutely WORST selection of anything. A thousand blue rug juniper, a thousand Stella D'oro daylily, a thousand Arborvitae and that's about what they stock.

Nice buy, nice pics. And, I love the dusty miler that has developed a trunk - you could just about dig that thing up and turn it into a cool bonsai.

I trimmed it into that shape. It was taking over the cactus are but now it looks neat. Althogh lowes and hd usually have poor selection, I have seen blue pot palms at my lowes before and recently saw southern magnolia. At a walmart not to far away i saw orleander for sale 2 years in a row.

Give them a cold winter, and start to fertilize in the Spring. They do not flower all year, they rest in the winter, and without the cold they will not flower well in the Spring. Some species only flower once during the year, others more often. Echinopsis may flower April 27 to oct 10 mine did this year, I fertilized them every month after they flowered which was always the end of the month. The “normal” P. chrysacanthion has bright yellow flowers. Next two pics are from Llifle. Parodia really know how to do flowers imo😉. Another P. chrysacanthion. Yours may be budding up, mine already is. The little pieces I numbered on yours are either seed pods or spent flowers from last year. You can pull them off if you want. Anything that’s in the dead center, I colored the area blue are potentially this year’s buds/flowers.

Are you sure the flowers on the cactus were fake? I work for Lowe's and the cactus flowers look real to me. I have noticed the flowers opening. (I am not a nursery buyer LOL). I agree that some palms and bananas are due...

Michigan Wal-marts also have oleanders for sale this year, I'm just running out of room to plant stuff. Decent prices too.

I really love the Cactus bed-all the color is awesome!

The one you didn't buy has flowers similar to this one.

islandbreeze Yeah most are fake I have seen some realones. There are no cactus that actually flower with green or blue flowers. If you look closely you could see the hot glue on them

LagoMar Opuntia and ice plant look really good together

Jim that one is really nice but I dont thinkm thats it. The spines are smaller. I think its some type of mammillaria

Great pics Dennis! You have a lot more luck with Cactus than I do. I havent gotten my eastern prickly pear to make flowers in 2 years, they just keep on making pads! I like the Dusty Miller Blooms! Nice finds at lowes. I agree with denninmi, they need to get a better selection, I have gotten some nice plants there, but when I went to a Home Depot outside the area (but in the same climate) I was amazed at their selection of palms that they consider "annuals"

It should be illegal to hot glue anything to a cactus. That is just wrong. Yet a common practice.

Thanks Alex the key to flowers is full sun and some fertilizer

denninmi I agree but most people who buy the cactus dont care and buy iy only because it looks like it is flowering

My prickly pears used to flower a lot but I think that their root system has been weakened in recent years since I have to keep digging up the annuals growing next to them every fall. Hopefully next year will bring some blooms!

Statenislandpalm- I owe you an apology for questioning the hot glue. I actually looked more closely today and you are correct, hot glue. Very strange, and I had to share that with my coworkers, who were just as baffled as I was. Some of the cacti did have buds on them, but there were definitely some flowers glued on.

These Opuntia are on the south side of the house and get exposed to full sun (year-round),in a hot location. Eventually I hope they cover this area and serve as a ground cover to keep out the weeds--over the mulch and the weed blanket beneath this former, grassy lawn area--way too much lawn to mow already.
