yellow, stunted new growth on knock out roses

What is causing new growth to be yellow and stunted on these red knock out roses.

They are 3 years old, in full sun, healthy till this year. Fertilized normally.

Other similar roses in a bed 40 feet away are fine.

Took a cutting to a garden center near here, we were told it was lack of iron in the soil. MAybe.....

No bug on undersides of leaves at all.

Curiously, maybe coincidental, we have blackberries about 100 ft away that for last 3 years have had similar yellowing and stunting of about 15% of th enew sprouts that grow out. I have just cut these shoots off - the plants are still alive

Please post an image of the shrub, overall.

Further, any herbicides used anywhere in the vicinity? And if so, what kind/name?

What is the pH of the soil these plants are growing in?
What kind of nutrient level did a good, reliable soil test show there was?
How well does that soil drain?
How well does that soil retain moisture?
How much organic matter is in that soil?
What is the tilth of that soil?
What does that soil smell like?
What kind of life is in that soil?
Iron can be inhibited by too much P, the soils pH, too much Copper, or a deficiency in the soil although as a micro nutrient that is seldom the real problem. Yelloowing of leaves, chlorosis, is caused by many things, not just the lack of, or inability of the plant to use, iron.

My Whiteout Rose blooms probably more than any other rose I have. It's a great "landscape rose" as many would say. It blooms well, but is not a showy flower or fragrant. It isn't technically a knock out rose. My whiteout faces northwest on a slight slope, so it doesn't get as much sun as it should ideally. It stays about 3' x 3'. My mom grows one and it gets maybe 3.5' x 3.5' and stays in a round bush shape for both of us. It does not blackspot, but gets a touch of PM here in KY for me. It certainly doesn't affect its flowering though. All of my roses this year have holes, which I suppose is caused by thrips. This rose is no exception. I lost it during the harsh winter two years ago. I planted another and it survived this past harsh winter with no protection.

Hi Laura, My two cents about the original post, just food for thought so you don't get too frustrated with your Knock Outs. First, I hope that you can figure out what is ailing your rose so it looks better. I know it is very frustrating to put a lot of effort into your garden and have something go south on you. Now as for the hoopla surrounding the KO rose family: Just like the pajamas I buy for my kids are "flame retardant," KO roses are "disease resistant." While you can resonably expect that if thrown into flames my children's pj's would catch fire, you can also expect that under extreme conditions, KO roses can get disease. I posted to the forum earlier today because I found my Rainbow KO seems to have Rose Rosette Disease. I know that it is very frustrating to have a rose marketed to you as if it were a plant that you can "set and forget," but the truth is that even KO's do better with a little pampering. Also, disease resistance vs. pest resistance... is KO marketed as pest resistant as well? I have an Autin rose that is getting eaten to death by a slug right now, and it's aggrevating. But in the end, I just try to remember that a little damage here and there isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, because roses are living things and to try to keep a rose looking absolutely perfect is like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill. :) Good Luck, Jennifer

Hi pickld, been a while. I gotta say when I first saw your pic I immediately thought "over-fertilized". Puckered leaves, margin burns, etc. But, occasional fish emulsion/epson salt isn't gonna hurt. Could be nitrogen burn. How about animals. You got a dog who has decided to "water" this pot? How about a cat who's taken a fancy to a new litter box with a pepper plant accent? Or, have YOU been gettin lazy and don't feel like heading inside to the bathroom? It can happen! lol I dunno. Good luck with it. Rick

Chris, follow the great advice on here. I too transplanted a knockout a couple of years ago and it has never really recovered to what it was before. I think it preferred the sunnier spot where I had it before it was moved. Even then, it would pretty much lose all of its leaves in the summer when it just was too hot outside. I think you will be able to save it. Just shade it a bit and give it some water. It should recover.

Look short of water. Could be due to dry soil or root problem or other things.

Where do you live?
And how do you take care of the rose? Water? Fertilizer? etc?

I have the same problem. leaves are yellow with green veins and I have read it can be related to iron deficiency. These are new plants from the nursery. I've had them about a month and they are in the same plastic containers they came in. (I am on a terrace and have to use containers). They are developed by the same company that sells Knock-outs but they are called "Drift" ground cover. After I got them I started to notice white mildew around the base of flower buds (they also had a couple of caterpillars that I got rid of) (I know, great nursery huh?) so I used Bayer All-In-One. Now all the flowers have died off and there is a lot of new growth but it all looks like the photos.

what are you a pro at???

you might want to try the container forum or one of the rose forums ... for future info on roses in pots ...

there is no way.. in my world.. that a plant that came from a nursery a month ago.. could be deficient in anything ...

other than being in a pot;. and yellowing.. we dont have much to go on ..

can we see a pic of the whole ... if its just his one branch.. maybe it was damaged .. and should just be cut out ...
