pumice rock/stone

Hi,

I never know weather to post all these things together and hope someone read or just to post like this...

Ok I have some plumerias coming soon and I found pumice in our area... was not easy... they sell it in the lawn and garden section at one place as lava rock... It is red... my question is this... It is bigger rock/stone like the size of golf balls or so and I wanted to know if this sounds like the same thing you all are talking about? I could take a hammer and break it but before I buy I wanted to know what you all thought?

I found Everybody's Garden Center in Portland Oregon which mail order ships both perlite and pumice. I do not know what the shipping costs are but it is a source of Uni-Grow products which are very good. Bill
Just type in perlite to the search or pumice and hit return.

Hi Susan

Lava chunks are a decorative material that is used as a ground cover. Here in the Southwest, many people cover their yards with this instead of growing plants or a lawn. The material we talk about is white and much smaller than the lava rocks you mentioned. Bill posted a picture of it in the "Perfect Cutting Planting Please!" thread. Anything you use to improve drainage would need to be a much smaller size than lava chunks. If you canÂt obtain pumice, perlite will work fine for drainage.

One of the main reasons people use pumice to improve drainage is to make the pots heavy. As plumeria grow taller, the pots they are in can become top heavy and tip over easily. Pumice makes the potting medium weigh more, which lowers the center of gravity and reduces the risk of tipping.

Fertilization will depend a lot of whether you are growing Indoors or out. Outside during the growing season I usually use about a half mix of the recommended dose with an all-purpose fertilizer every 4 watering or so... If I remember to do so, that is. I have grown Sanseveria in a number of places and atm I have three doing well in a not too well lit southish window In my bedroom. Honestly, these really only seem to need watering maybe once a month. They look nicer with more neglect for some reason. The aloe you should judge based on how the leaves look and feel. A happy aloe will be plump and green, with its leaves standing up or out. Floppiness, turning red or yellow can be a sign of underwatering or too much light. Turning brown can be overwatering, frost or sun burn and should he approached with caution. Both can and will grow back from healthy roots in case of a freeze.

Tom I was checking my email throughout the day and I didn't know if you got my email address. I am already back from Largo, and I was at Haines City before that. I was hoping to have gotten your phone# while I was up there so I could have stopped by. I bought 8 bags of the 6/14 silica sand so at least I have something, but I still would prefer the Gran-I-Grit. Tom, how long is the wait once you order it from that feed store? Is the product actually Gran-I-Grit, or some different named stuff, and is it similar in size and structure? I still might take you up on the offer for the grit when I stop back up that way. We need to exchange emails again if you nerver got my email.

I would wonder if the stone product might be alkaline and therefore incompatible. Otherwise you will not rid yourself of weeding and picking up debris by going from organic mulch to mineral mulch - and as mentioned the stone material can be hard to tidy up. The only advantage is that it does not decompose. But spent plant parts will still fall on it and either have to be meticulously cleared away or a little humus layer will form that small weeds can get started in. Weed cloth works where you are using a heavy nursery grade material and it is keep free of all debris, including intentionally applied mulches or stone coverings. Even in a nursery setting anywhere potting soil falls on it or a hole is poked in it weeds are likely to result.

Well, that's interesting. We were getting some hard rings (even though we have soft water) after being gone for a while. My husband used a pumice on it and I swear it got worse! It now gets the rings faster than the downstairs toilet, which did not get the pumice treatment. They are identical Kohlers. In our new house, we have 2 different Totos and they get a slight ring when we are gone for two weeks, but it comes off with just a quick brush from a regular toilet brush. I thought the issue in our old house was that the pumice had scratched it, but maybe not.

Hi All,
Ok what I had to do was use the link that Bill left for me to look at and there I ordered it... I went to a local nursery but it was more money for them to order then for me to order off this site sooooooo... I just have to wait a little longer... Is ok for I dont have the new plumerias yet either...
