"The 2nd week of April I applied Scotts Fertilizer with crabgrass preventer." Did you put down Scott's with Halts (pendamethalin) or with Tupersan (siduron)? If you used the one with Halts your turf seed may not germinate, and if it does it might not grow very much if at all. Hopefully you used the Tupersan. If you did, then your new seed will be unaffected. The thing about new grass is it needs phosphorus for root growth, and I'm pretty sure Scott's spring fertilizer doesn't have it. If it was me, I would put down starter at half the recommended rate now, and the second half after your first or second mowing of the new stuff. Since you are in Maine lawn disease pressure is a lot lower than most of the country due to the cooler nights, and less humid air. So I wouldn't worry too much about the extra nitrogen you are applying with the starter fertilizer. Labor day is generally considered the last day you should apply a high nitrogen fertilizer, probably earlier the more southern your location in the country. Fall is the best time to fertilize with a lot of nitrogen as it gets the lawn ready for winter. Usually I do two drops, Sept. 1, and early November. If the grass is young your last drop should be earlier to discourage snow mold, early October is good. Combination weed and feed products should be avoided. They don't work very well, and they cost more. You would do better spot treating the weeds with a tank sprayer and Weed-B-Gone, or the whole lawn with a hose end sprayer. If you have new grass you can't use any weed control products until it has been cut a few times, that's the problem with spring seeding.

You might try this to keep them stunted...I did this last year and accidently stunted mine. I put them in clay pots and had them in the shade and they never got more than a foot tall, then when I saw they were not growing well, I put them in the ground. These things took off and were almost 20 feet long. They overtook my satellite dish that is on top of my garden shed so bad that I had to go cut them back away from it. The pic below is in September, by the end of the season they were half way to the house on the satellite line! The blooms are beautiful though. Here they are in October...this only two plants.

Growing on temp 65F taking 15-18 weeks to produce a plant in a 4 inch pot. Ideal pH 5.4 to 6.2..... As long as there is good air circulation watering from the top will not pose any more problems than produce by watering from the bottom.

I would have to agree with the others who say these seeds germinate easy. I got about 50 seeds from Mike in Chicago and one of them happened to drop in a flower bed. A few weeks later I noticed something different looking than my azaleas coming up and realized it was the Robusta. The soil was pretty dry and it was extremely hot weather at the time. So I would say minimal moisture and very warm soil would make them germinate quickly. The seed must have been just barely covered with redwood mulch. Just enough to hold some moisture. Good luck... but you probably won't need it. btw... I'm going to protect the seedling over winter to see just how hardy Robusta can be. But it sprouted in an unfortunate spot so I'll have to move it in spring... if it survives the midwestern winter. Now wish me luck because I will need it... LOL.
