Something digging under my garden?

I have a 10x20 vegetable garden plot. I planted some lettuce & spinach about a month ago, so there are a few seedlings, but it's mostly just dirt (waiting to plant the rest until later this month). There is something digging under the dirt - the only evidence are mounds of dirt. When I step on them they compact back down. How can I figure out what it is, and what to do about it?

Moles come to mind right off and although their tunneling can uproot plants they do not eat them. Moles primary source of food are earthworms, which is an indication of a healthy soil. Gophers also will tunnel, but you will find entry and exit holes in those tunnels that will not be there if it is moles. Gophers will eat your plants as will voles, Field mice, that will use the tunnels of others. The most effective means of control is a good, tight fence around the garden with some of the buried at least 1 foot deep with a leg, at least 1 foot long pointing outward from the garden, a backwards "L".
There are numerous poisons that have varying degrees of success as well as various repellants that have varying degrees of succes, all of which can be very expensive to purchase.

Do you have raccoons around? They love to play with covers, pick up sticks and move them, dig up seeds, replace stones, etc. I swear they are so smart they will open and close the garden gate and rehang the hummer feeder after drinking it - we watched them do it. Sometimes when I find something weird like that I think it must have been one of the grandkids except they weren't even around. Never seen a grub or beetle move a stick and ants generally pose no threat in the garden unless they are fire ants. Just something to consider. Dave

See if you can find what the digger is digging for. Dig up a square foot of soil looking specifically for grubs. If you find a bunch in that square foot, then that is likely what they are looking for. If you kill the grubs, the diggers should stop digging.

I'm having the same problem! I don't think I'm quite the gardner all of you seem to be, but I like having nice flowers in the spring and summer so I have a barrel in my front yard that I planted with spikes and petunias. Since I planted them last week, I keep having to go and re-plant them b/c something is digging through my barrel. Help!! We have squirrels (with huge attitudes!), racoons, chipmunks - the whole bit. Is there anything I can put on the soil to repel these little buggers????

"I don't understand why they don't touch the plant and just go around it. Its like they're avoiding it" They are :-) The plant(s) is in the way. They simply bury their treasure where the plant is not. Squirrels routinely 'plant' horse-chestnuts in all of my containers and usually in the ground as well.....even in the middle of the lawn. I never notice until spring when I need to repot or the dang chestnuts germinate and start growing! They never bother any plants at all. The only time that is an issue is if they dig up bulbs like tulip or crocus to eat.
