Does it look like animal damage and not pests? I would suspect deer even though there is plenty for them to eat elsewhere. All my sunflowers were "pruned down to 4 ft; the tomatoes were chewed off at the top, and they even chewed on the rhubarb! I lost all my peaches to them and they have damaged some of the peach branches. I have to assume deer given the heighth but maybe it's bigfoot.

That is it!!! Thank you so much. I took the two off, but it's amazing how quickly they damaged the plant. I have my bug guy coming to spray the yard again after Isaac has left, and I'll be sure to keep a keen eye on the papaya. I was glad to read that they are almost always found on papayas, so my other 8 trees are (cross your fingers) in the clear. I have had such trouble with papaya here. This is my second try after my first one was overcome with spider mites. Thank you again for the quick response!

Actually, washing them off with water and then spraying with insecticidal soap is not efficient. The soap application is effective only when the product is wet. Thus....if you disperse the aphids with a strong stream of water, you've already eliminated a great number of the pests in the first place. Keep spraying with the water, on a daily basis. Insecticidal soap applications could damage tender new growth, if done repeatedly. Also, it is a general rule that any dead, diseased, or damaged growth be removed from your plants as soon as you observe it. By the way, repeated use of the soap sprays reduces the chance that you could begin to build up a population of beneficial insects. ( I don't recommend that you purchase said critters, though.) Use those products when absolutely necessary and then with some caution.
