Cutting off old inflos

I have many plants this year that never dropped the old inflo. In some cases, the flowering portion died off, but the stem is still green. Some are still all green, looking like they may bloom again!

Do you ormally cut off the old inflo stem, or wait for it to drop off?

I otice that most of these also di not branch off, like they normally do!

I have the same thoughts i got inflo stem that are still green and attached to my plummies. Not sure if i should leave it alone are cut off. I hope someone can help us :)...
I was thinking to leave it alone and let nature decide for them.

Hey Jen,

I have had some inflos that were left from this summer when i brought them inside. They continued to look like they still had a chance on developing blooms, so i left them on the tree. Now my Taj Mahal has a huge inflo while it is under the lights . If you think there is a chance, i would leave it....but if the whole head of the inflo is gone and you only have the stem left, then i would cut it off.

Like i mentioned to Jen, If it is just the old inflo stem and there isnt a chance of any blooms...I would cut it off. It will naturally fall off, but it wont hurt the tree if you decide to cut it off yourself.

Mindy, Congrats on your first bloom! Yay! I think it was Peg who said that if you thought you were hooked before, just wait--I second that. Get ready--it's a sickness LOL Lynn, K gives really smart advice (by the way, K, loved your recent photos of the Punchbowl, the planes, and Divine) and also has been growing our beloved trees far longer than I. That said, my Veracruz Rose did the same thing as your Elsie, and because VCR is such a monster-sized tree, I think I'm gonna leave the inflo-branch be, because it's pretty darn big!: pro'ly only 25% smaller than the bona fide branches that resulted from the blooming point. I just want to experiment and see what happens. K, I'll likely be confirming the soundness of your advice before long...but I'll report back. Greg

I'm guessing he's using a rooting powder that contains a fungicide. You can use any type of fungicide on the cuts. Some cuttings won't develop foliage and roots if they have an inflo because all the energy is going to the flowers. Cutting off the inflo will promote root development and in turn foliage. It can be difficult to snip off an inflo, especially for those of us that don't get many but like Dave says.......

Rooting Rule One: After the initial watering, do not water, move, disturb, or dig around a cutting until you see six inch leaves or roots are seen in a clear bag or bottle. Rooting Rule Two: If an inflo begins and the leaves are not growing or showing signs of constant growth, cut the inflo off so the energy is concentrated on rooting. Rooting Rule Three: If the stem is hard at ground level, you are still in the game. Leave it be. If you violate these rules, do not be surprised if you have rooting failure. Impatience is an enemy of success.

Hi Jen,
I agree with Laura (Hi Laura!) and Kim. Last year, when I practically knew nothing about growing plumerias, I still had some old inflos from 2010 on my plants and they started blooming before the newly grown ones from 2011. It was such a nice surprise to have these early flowers! This year, again, I am waiting impatiently for last year's inflos to show 'signs of life'.

I usually wait until they're really, really dead before
cutting them off. All brown and black and shriveled. In
fact, most of the time I let nature take it's course and
I don't break them off until they're just about ready to
fall off on their own.
