Seeking advice on what to get and where to get it....

I've just become interested in cycads, and would like some recommendations. I live in the Greater Seattle Area (usually Zone 8b, but we did have a number of barely 15 deg F days in a row last year); generally drizzly winters; usually in the mid-30's at night, but with occasional below freezing temps; little or no snow. My questions are:

1. What would be good cycad choices for my yard?

2. What would be good (even exotic) cycad choices for a small greenhouse that is never below about 38 deg F in the winter?

3. Which are the most reputable, but reasonably priced, online vendors?

I have two Cogshall trees, they are supposed to be a dwarf variety should be able to keep it at 8 to 10 feet with regular pruning. I love how they are naturally rounded in shape without any pruning so far. Just like barbcoleus, I only planted it April of this year. I have never tasted this variety but have heard from people that said it was very good. I bought mine at Lowe's and the other from a local nursery. I am worried about the cold air we are getting this thursday, I will have to cover my trees, I hope I don't lose them. Evelyn, your tree is absolutely beautiful, you are so lucky with all those flowers, good luck with it!

Purple is hard color to obtain with hydrangeas. It is a color that you get in a narrow pH band between acidic and alkaline soil. It helps if your shrub resists turning blue. To get the same results as the one in that garden, your soil needs to have the soil pH and grow the same shrub. You can ask the owner for the name of that hydrangea and also ask for cuttings; and -if the person knows- get the soil pH level there. Then determine what your soil pH is and make it more acidic with aluminum sulfate or garden Sulphur; or use garden lime to make your soil more alkaline. Then periodically measure your soil pH to monitor the soil pH as it gets closer and closer to the goal.

Try an overlapping layer of cardboard instead of landscape fabric & top with wood chips as from a tree trimmer. That way no weed seeds. If no cardboard try thick layers of newspaper or scrap office paper. I compost staples & paper clips. If I don't have many wood chips I use what compost or mulch ingredients available then topped with the wood chips for a uniform "frosting" layer. Used coffee grounds, straw, chicken manure plus bedding, shredded leaves, grass clippings, mown over cutting back of perennials, etc. If you're concerned about weed seeds just make sure you're not adding them. After 2 days on the lawn in the sun the nepeta & hardy geraniums I cut back were dry & shriveled. The mulching mower plowed right over them. I forgot to ask hubby to bag the lawn that week because I wanted the mulch. Only a few stubborn stems remained on the lawn to gather. Grass clippings are my favorite because they dry so easily on a tarp or in the sun on a windy day. Easy to spread & feed the soil. Just make sure no weed & feed on the lawn 1st.

It is called a design wall and you can buy one or make one. You can use batting or felt. If you search the internet for "quilting design wall" you will come up with a ton of different ways to make or buy, depending on your needs and space. I copied one link below, but there are a ton of other variations of design walls. LindaOH from this forum has posted directions on her blog for her version of a portable design wall. Kudzu, I found some nice, but standard cycads at IKEA. Is there any avaiable in you9r area. I can't think of an online store that sells them, those I shop out usually sell tropical C&S's.
Are you planning on keeping cycads yr round? Be careful if you buy a Sago..They don't like wet feet in winter, especially if nights get cold..My last Sago rotted by watering at night, what a big mistake..let me know if you plan on bringing in at night or leaving out yr round..Toni

Interesting...I have an Ikea nearby, but never saw any very exotic plants there. I'll have to re-check. As far as location, I'd like to determine which, if any cycads, will do ok outside year-round here, and which might be good here but need to go inside my greenhouse in wihter.

Here are some cold hardy cycads I usually grow for northern customers:

Dioon edule (many variations)
Cycas panzhihuaensis

I don't grow it, but you can get C. revoluta as well.
