I've found quite a few of the large growing palms do adjust to being indoors through the winter months, but remember and I've found it painfully true, that if they do well for you, they will soon outgrow the average house and average height ceilings. My biggest problem is providing adequate light through the winter, and humidity helps as well. You'l find those like the queens that like full sun will get very weak in lower light quite fast , so you must have some very bright light for them to do well. To tell the truth the average indoor conditions in most northern homes through the winter , are not to their liking. I keep my house warmer than most northern homes in the winter, and it's also much more humid in my house then the averge northern home, but light is my biggest problem. In some cases as well, they may need very good air circulation as well, as they hate stagnant air.

Mike, is Queen Palm the same as Triangle Palm?
If so, it's true these palms prefer bright light. In winter, set in a sunny window..I keep my palms in semi-unheated rooms, but also keep a humidifer going, and 2 indoor fountains. Queens/Triagnels take a lot of room, especially height..You can control this by keeping the palm a bit underpotted. And living in NY, palms will not grow as fast as they do in warm, tropical areas. Another thing is, only fertilize 2-3 times in summer. If you feed more the plant will take off, and because of cloudy, cold days, plants do not need feeding (in winter)

I don't really see why you couldn't try it if you can supply enough light for that type of palm. I've overwintered a decent sized majesty palm this year and its come through great. As mentioned above, you must make sure there is plenty of humidity and air circulation throughout the winter. I used a humidifier and a couple of fans in the room. I still had the odd spider mite on it but it never got out of control. Once the summer comes along the palms just love our heat and humidity (assuming we get some heat this summer.. which seems to be the case so far!).

I over winter my Queen Palms inside the house each year with good results, just place them in a sunny location. Mist them everyday and I also use an oscillating fan on a timer I find using the fan with misting everyday keeps the mites off them. When the temperature stays above freezing I place them on the back cover porch which receives early morning sun. I leave them on the back porch for about a month then I move them out in full sun. The only problem I have with them is that I have one that is getting too large to be carried in and out of the house.

As well as what 'lovethosepalms' says another tip that I've learned is to keep that palm in the 12" pot. If you do repot, the queen palm might be able to fill the new pot with roots over the summer but if it doesn't it is incredibly easy to overwater and kill it in the winter. The palm will do better if it is rootbound.

Queen palm is one of my favorite feather palms. Yes, you can overwinter them in a northern home. Give them bright light and keep them on the cool side (many palms suffer from dry indoor air in winter). I let mine dry out well between waterings. Mine spend April - November on the patio in full sun.

I would agree with that but I think with the proper culture starvation it could be maintaineed for many years
Not as a Bonsai but as a immature dwarf.
I've kept an areca for many years in a pot.It did not die but has remained in an immature state. In 15 gallon pot it has renained under 6 feet. I did no root pruning but limit the nitrogen.
I've got some royal palm seedlings coming along that are just now starting to form a trunk after 3 years. The tap root has been pruned twice removing 50 percent each time.
Going to wait until next spring to individually pot them up. Going to use several methods or restriction.
The goal is to mature at under 10 feet smaller if possible. Death does not seem inevitable as I was told. But i do suspect i'll end up with permanently immature palms

I have a 8' queen palm that stays inside in the winter time and it does OK. I dont know how much longer I can keep it , maybe 1-2 years at best. It has done very well inside the last 2 years. It is in a west facing window and is now quite large. My wife hates it and that may be the kiss of death in the fall.

I think that you could keep a Queen Palm as a houseplant for several seasons--just be aware that in places like Florida they will grow like three feet a year. But it would definitely be worth experimenting and trying one this year to bring outside when Spring comes. Would definitely make for a great container or featured garden plant for the Summer...set by the pool or front porch.

What's the cost on this baby? At the Home Depot, in Florida, they would sell for $9.99

Wow! Way to bring this one up from the depths! I have since moved to Ft. Lauderdale and can grow just about anything outside. What a difference from Buffalo! I'm also sort of a palm snob now and turn my nose up at queens :)
