Foxgloves - Small holes in leaves....
Comments (3)Carrie and Duane, Cutworms actually have to surround the stem, they cut the plant off at the stem, not create holes. In order to avoid cutworms one can plant a twig right up against the stem when planting the plant or some others wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the stem before planting. Carrie the holes are not being caused by cutworms. Perhaps ear wigs but not cutworms. Alberta...See MoreOT- Looking for giant Elephant Ears and assorted Hosta for trade!
Comments (29)Loretta, I have 4 siam ruby reds, that I left outside thruout the winter. I covered them in February when we had the 2 weeks of freezing weather. I covered them with a sheet and bungie cord, with 4 inches of mulch. All 4 made it thru the freezes. The one that I planted on the South side of the house, did not even freeze back, it is doing great, its about 4ft tall, and has pups. The 2 I planted on the East side, did not freeze back to the ground, but did have to be cut back, they are about 2 ft tall right now, no pups. The one I planted on the North side froze back to the ground, it is slowly coming back. I did not know where to plant them, so I planted them on diffrent sides, the one on the south side, seemed to multiply much faster then the other 3. I have a sprinkler system, so they were watered every other day, even when it froze. This is zone 9b coastal, Rockport Texas. I hope this information helps you. Comments (27)Thanks for all the comments and recommendations on Lamb's Ears. Mine are all in one place now and a fairly dry one I hope. They just about desintegrated in the wet soil I had them first. The flowers are OK and I'll leave them alone for a while, eventhough one of them that had been just about water logged did not get it's head up but it was sprouting little leaves, so I cut off the stem. I think I'll get some dark purple salvias or the sedum as a companion. May in Atlanta, Georgia - :-)...See MoreCanna questions and other big leaves
Comments (6)Christie: Some thoughts are ornamental bananas, any kind of palms you may be able to find and some ficus. Try caladiums, too. When I lived in the islands, philodendrums (sp?) were also all over the place....straight green and varigated and there were some varieties that grew really big leaves. How about orchids, gardenias and bird of paradise for color? Bromelaids are also very common...have some fun with pineapples, too. Oh yeah -- lots of ferns!! Do you have a warm sunroom or greenhouse or something? Gosh! I am so envious....the possibilities are endless! Did I mention any kind of hibuscus? You might also experiment with papayas....Don't know if the grocery store papayas will seed, but those will give you big leaves, too....Have fun! Let us know how it goes.....Even better -- send pictures!...See Morevenusdenton
