They're only caterpillars for about 2 weeks. After that, they make a cocoon and become a moth. So, that may be the only one or that might be the only one left. The damage left by slugs is usually smaller than that left by cut worms. By that, I mean smaller holes and they are usually more random. I've also had army worms, but they are just another caterpillar and the damage is similar to that shown in the photo. bk

i dont understand how a tall deer .. can eat under a net ... ergo.. i am thinking small ... and i dont see the deer putting the net back after eating ... though if they were that cooperative.. perhaps i would be a bit more lenient towards them.. lol .. but i think you missed my point.. or more likely.. i didnt make myself clear ... you need to sherlock this out.. we cant tell you so you can go research it ... it is not like some wraith mysteriously hovers down to the ground and attacks ... deer.. being large.. leave cloven hoof prints in soft garden .. and a large version of what look like monster rabbit droppings .. and tend to rip and tear off the leaves ... rabbits.. well.. you saw the link ... leave no prints ... and tend to cleanly slice the leaf petiole at the ground.. and then nibble away ... they do not tend to destroy a whole plant.. and more often than not.. cut a leaf or two.. then hop away without eating them .. and that really PO's me.. as i can accept a little damage to feed mother nature.. but that is just wasteful.. whats that all about ... i presume this happened in summer.. and you probably dont have a pic to help us.. but i dont know how we get past pure speculation without some further observations from you ... Hi Lisa ch, This may be a little late answering your question, but I agree with the above members. It could also be earwigs. We have been having a bad year for earwigs in Toronto, Canada. There is not much to stop them. For the slugs I use copper wire from Home Depot. You can also get copper meshing from some garden centres but this expensive. I buy about 3 feet of 5 strand copper ground wire and unravel it. I then make a circle around each hosta with the wire touching the ground all around.It takes time but I have almost hole free hostas. The slugs won't cross the wire because of a chemical in the wire that irritates the underbelly.When I spring clean I shake up the ring for the next. blacky1

Thought you never loved us all anymore lol As far as the age,they have been planted since 2012, 2013 and 2014 so are not some of the newer ones. All those roots sticking out may temp those voles to take a hike down the hill from Myrle's place and that would never do. Just born to worry about everything as if that makes it better . Could be my clay based soil needs lighter mix in it again
