What does your potting mix consist of?

The decline in your Cycad really shocks me. I store about 10 different Cycad varieties, all in pots, every winter in my garage with no harm. They are tough plants. By all means DO NOT discard yours! I bet it comes back to life...

In any event, as far as the potted specimens go I suspect there is something going on which is related to an unhealthy root system resulting in a weakened plant unable to cope with an extended dormant period. I also think it is very possible that you may have underestimated how much water they need even when it is cold in the garage. A root ball constricted in a pot still needs some moisture no matter how cold.

As for the outdoor plants - I can't help you much since I myself do not grow those particular varieties so I can't give you any advice based on experience. I do overwinter a Trachy wagnerianus in a pot outdoors under an awning so it stays dry, along with several Agaves.

The King Sago may still be fine, though its so slow growing that I may not know for awhile.
Just this morning, I tugged on the center spear of the Yatay and Capitata and they just came right out. Luckily my bigger windmill may look like its going to come through (i hope).
Being I just had my second child, I dont have too much time for this anymore.
Hopefully the big one perks up and Ill just have one to worry about.

I just wanted to make all aware that about 4 weeks ago, my larger windmill in the ground had spear pull. There were all little insects crawling inside. It was horrible. Just a big black hole.
I poured some Hydrogen peroxide down the center, then 4 days later, poured some copper fungicide in the center and kept watering it with SuperThrive.
Well, who would have guessed, the little insects were gone and as of today, its pushing out the rotted spear/branches and a nice green center spear is right behind those!

I guess my point is, DON'T give up. Help them out and they may come back!
Unfortunately, all my others are goners. No movement and more decay. :( Happy though my large one appears to be pulling through!

Sorry for your losses, but at least your trachy made it. Eventually you will find the perfect way for protecting your palms that works best for you and every year they will come back well. (I have 2 windmills and 1 pindo which I am giving protection for the 1st winter, hopefully enough to get them through without any spear pull).
Also if you want less work then I guess needle palms and sabal minros are always an option, and make great tropical shrubs.
Good luck this summer and if its sunny and warm, your windmill will make a full recovery by early August.

Thanks Tropical. Oddly, I protected this palm as the same way as last year and this year, though it was slightly colder, took a beating.
Strange, the tree looked awesome. It only started to decline when the weather was warming up.
