Summer Garden Update: July 19, 2011

This morning I took few pics of the garden while taking photo of the some strange bugs on harsh radish. I have shared those in my picasa instead of the sharing them here... please see link below.

Eggplants, Peppers, Cucumbers, Okra are producing well. Armenian cucumbers are growing crazy at rate of 2-3" per day- 6" become 18" in four days. Southern peas stated blooming and also see little pods here and there. Bush beans and Pole beans have lot of flowers but no pods yet. Second and third crop of bush beans and s-peas growing well. I have mulched all beds heavily with lawn clips that may helping them lot, all watering is done by soaker hose...

Wow, Chandra, Everything looks great. I love the little pond. That is on my wish list. And the Veggies....beautiful.

Our garden isn't doing that well. The deer got both the bush beans and the pole beans. And the heat got the cucumbers. I just have too much garden--1/2 acre--to keep well watered. And I have enough tomatoes in the freezer, so I am going to take some out. Have good sweet peppers but the hots aren't doing as well.

And we still don't have okra11 :( Should have southern peas soon though.

Chandra, the bug you asked to ID is Harlequin Bug.

Chandra, Your garden looks magnificent! If the weed ID you're seeking is for the last two photos shown, I believe it is lambsquarters, aka goosefoot aka Chenopodium album. It is a rampant grower and reseeds very vigorously, so yank it out before it sets seeds! (Lambsquarters is one of the wild greens that some people like to eat.) Dawn

Hi all! It's been much too long since I have popped in. I want to thank Suzanne (gardeningmomof3) for the cutest new addition to my gardens! This little bunny has found a home for now right beside some telestar picotee dianthus in bloom. :))) Thank you sooooo much, Suzanne!!! She is just adorable! Hope everyone is keeping cool and safe this summer. The high humidity and extreme temps have certainly been a challenge here. There has been a bit of relief here in the last few days and we are in desperate need of rain. The crops are beginning to show early signs of heat stress. Watering the gardens has become an almost daily chore after work. :( And I just finished a month's worth of meds for a tick bite that was suspected as a lyme disease carrier. For me, I had the telltale "bull's eye" look around the bite area. This isn't always a sure sign of lyme disease infection as DH was bitten a number of years ago while on vacation in Arkansas and had no such sign. But we both had flu-like symptoms and for me I had a dull headache and loss of stamina as well. I hope everyone is using proper precautions to protect yourself and family with a bug spray product with DEET when out and about! What a lush, beautiful garden!! I can't believe how wonderful it looks after seeing the post-storm pics a while back.

How old are your grape plants? Those are on my list to buy & start for next year.

You have such a beautiful garden. I also really like your trellis supports. Are they cattle panels?

I bought a white Hidcote grape and it turned out to be a concord, so I envy yours.

You have convinced me to grow Jet Star next summer. Also, I'm planning to start some Armenian tomatoes next year. Maybe they handle the heat as well as those melons have!

PunkinHeadJones, we too had spider mites on early planted beans and marigolds. I sprayed them with orange habanero chilli solution, seems to be working.

Thank you. Little pond is easy very easy to build, we have done that in one weekend, little digging and placing pond liner and some stones around the edges. Thanks for the bud ID. Now I need wear gloves and pick each one of them this evening. I also see lot of grasshopper in all sizes every where in the garden. Planning to spray some need oil or will look for the EcoBran bates suggested by Dawn.

Diane, Thank you, all your blessings made my garden to recover faster. Our grape vines will be three year old by this fall. I bought a set of four plants from Sam's Club which include Canadice (1), Concord (2) and Himrod (1). Concord and Himrod are doing better than Canadice. There was a block rot problem in the beginning, then I was looking for control measure then storm hit, so did not use any control measure, but still we have been harvesting few bunches whenever my daughter ask for it. Overall not bad, they are very tasty.

Chandra, it looks amazing, you truly have a gift for gardening. I also have major watering issues, that will be a big project to tackle before next spring. There is a leak somewhere that waters a ten foot square of bermuda grass, lol. That is the one place in our yard that is luscious and green.
I had to choose which plants to continue watering, and the squash and eggplants won over the others that are just suffering.
We also have a white cat, he has blue eyes. The golden eyes on Lucky are gorgeous!
And I LOVE that cattle panel tunnel!! Does it run north-south or east-west?

Chandra, my Canadice has never gotten as big as the concords, but they have been very nice grapes and make a lovely reddish jelly. I've had them all for about 10 years (although it is hard to believe I've been back in my hometown that long!) I have had very good production from the Concords (like 40 lbs one year), but such a problem with the heat keeping them from ripening evenly, that I am replacing them gradually. I have never had this problem with the canadice.

I seriously want to build a cattle panel tunnel. Have you been to Linnaeus teaching garden in Tulsa? They have arches built from cattle panel anchored with rebar in their raised beds.

Chandra - I'm sooooo happy that everything has recovered so well for you! As someone said - you've got the gift! Thank you for reminding all of us that there is light at the end of tunnel!

I too am harvesting tomatoes about 7 or 8 every other nite. I've got lima pods too (finally!). My southern peas are doing well, but only the purple hull are being harvested yet. Other beans are struggling. Okra is coming along (Cowhorn) but just now blooming.

My peppers....well...they're trying.

I ordered and received my Pea Sheller. Thru trial and error I went with recommendations and if you dry the pods for a coupla days...they work GREAT! Fresh picked...I got pea soup. Lesson learned.

I've gotta time to stop over and see your garden! Gotta see those sweet babies too!

Oh my, Chandra, the garden is just spectacular! It looks like it should be featured in House & Garden Magazine. I could only wish that mine looked even remotely like that. But you've given some really good ideas for next year. Thank you so much for sharing your photos.

Eggplants need one third of the water rest of the summer vegetables. I am planning build PVC lines to each bed and connect them with one soaker hose per 16ft bed. Our raised beds and trellies run east-west. Lukcy is one of the nicest and very intelligent cats I ever had.

I stated these grapes after my visit to Central Asia, I saw most of the houses in rural Uzbekistan especially in Fergana valley has grapes vines in front and backyards. They ate looks awesome and very tasty. So started them over pergola. Good to know about Linnaeus teaching garden, I didÃ¯Â¿Â½t know about it, will visit one of my next visit to Tulsa. I saw some of the pics of cattle panel arches, I will build one or two next year for the trelling flowers

We cook with all most all kinds of gourds. Some of the luffas such as sponge and ridge makes one of the best curries and also use them for stuffing, making dosa etc. They usually taste much better than zucchinis.

Some of the credits goes to you too. All your peppers, eggplants, beans are doing great. Yes there is green-light at the end of the tunnel! I may buy Pea sheller based on the how all our peas blooms and set fruits. Fresh peas coup sounds yummy, will try once I get some peas, may be that time I wll ask for the recipes. Thanks, picasa is my one of the most secured archive. I always select some representative pics of each trip and store them there in that way I never loose memories. Picasa charge just 20 for 20GB. I will release of the albums soon.

I have to say it looks spectacular as always and has recovered so wonderfully from the microburst/hail storm.

If looking at your garden doesn't inspire your friends to build their own gardens, then nothing will.

I hope Mother Nature is kinder to us all next year too. She's been on a rampage all year long.

Chandra, I keep going back and looking at the photos of your lovely garden. I finally bookmarked it so I can refer to it later on. It looks as though you have spent years in developing the space. You are such an inspiration!

I have so many questions about the garden. Did you need to bring in topsoil for the raised beds? What sort of mulch are you using? There appears to be a bale of straw sitting by the fence, but it looks as though your mulch is pretty finely chopped. Are you using straw and cutting it up, or what?

One of the things I find the most impressive is your use of vertical supports to make optimum use of all the available space. I'm sure you must have planned it in such a way that you can rotate your crops and still use the existing supports. Since I began doing a veggie garden here a couple of years ago, one of my major problems seems to be the incredible vigor of the plants when they grow in Oklahoma. No matter how much room I try to give them or how wide an area of mulch I put down, the plants fill it up and keep right on going, turning into a jungle. Clearly I am not going about it properly. I need to spend some time and focus on your methods of vertical support for some of these wide-reaching things.

There's been quite a bit of discussion in other threads about tomato supports and other vertical garden applications. I believe I'll start a new thread just for that. Maybe we can talk about things like shade cloth and other overhead things as well.

At the begging of the year, there has been great discussion over the building new beds, soils, soil test, vertical trellises, cages, etc. You may able to find lots of info from those two threads, which I have linked below;

I am happy to share my experience. I have pics of each stage of building these beds in my picasa. My garden is not old and I am not experienced gardener either. Whatever I learned is through great help from the folks in this forum. I started my first garden (8x8ft) in 2009, then added 16x26 in 2010, and another 14 beds (4x16) this year. Earlier I was thinking 16x26 is more than enough for us, but after my addiction to GW and I felt that space is nothing... then birth of 14 new beds! I still feel space limitation LOL! ...

Please feel free to stop at place whenever you are traveling this side.
