I've cut back a little on what I'm growing this year. I'm growing dill, chives (regular and garlic), Italian and Greek oregano, LOTS of rosemary, basil, Pesto Perpetuo Basil (variegated, non-flowering), cilantro, lemon balm, spearmint, peppermint, lime mint, Kentucky Colonel mint, lemon grass, strawberries (plants coming back from last year). Decided not to plant parsley because it's always in the grocery store and is fresh, cheap and abundant. Just mostly stuff I learned that I cooked with a lot last year. Something entirely new for me.....I am growing four lemon trees this year. Three are about 2 feet tall, two Meyer and one Eureka. The other one is Sambo (sweet), and it's about 5 feet tall. I am SO glad the temperatures have stabilized around here. I planted seedlings a little early (first week in April) and the temps went down the freezing a week ago. But they were all hauled inside for about 5 nights in a row (whew! What a workout!). They are all doing well.

Spring fever! What will you grow new this year?

We're getting serious spring fever and are doing our garden planning now. We just placed our massive seed orders for the six raised beds OH built last summer, and there's lots of new stuff. Got three kinds of kale, three kinds of beets, gailan, melons, sugar snap peas, snow peas, bush beans, zucchini, scallions, spinach, three kinds of lettuce, hot peppers, sweet peppers, three kinds of carrots, arugula, cucumbers, Thai, holy, and Genoese basil, cilantro, parsley, thyme, lemongrass, sage, and marsh mallow, because a friend saw it in the Baker Creek catalog and wants us to try making our own marshmallows now. The big project this year is rebuilding the deck that is behind the garage. The previous owners had a massive climbing rose on it that recently died. This was not heartbreaking to me, as I don't understand why you'd want a plant that tries to hurt everyone sitting on your deck. So now we're planning a wall of clematis to cover the garage and make the deck pretty. Thinking Clematis Huldine and Etoile Violet, both of which would be new to me. Is it spring yet?

Some varieties tolerate cooler weather better than others, but none of them are at their best in it. And tomatoes need sun to develop full flavor, so for rainy climates, something that 1) resists fungal diseases better and 2) has an assertive flavor profile to begin with is probably a good choice. Seysonn is a good person to ask, as his climate right now can be cool and rainy during many years. However, it's worth pointing out that there's more to it than temps and rain, and a lot of people who live in similar climates report very different results with the same varieties. The only way to know for sure whether something will do well is to try it. There are some general guidelines, though. For the UK, I wouldn't recommend a very long-season tomato like Brandywine, for example. Research varieties you're thinking about at Tatiana's TomatoBase. You will be able to see how it grew for people in various locations. And remember that any DTM (days to maturity) estimates are not from seed but from transplant into the ground, which usually happens when plants are about 6 weeks old. They're also very variable depending on growing conditions, so look at them comparatively and don't depend on them to be accurate for YOU, i.e., if you have grown a variety already, then compare the seed seller's listed DTM for that variety with the variety you're thinking of growing just to get an idea of whether it will take longer or not and by approximately how much time. Note that people can get really different results even on comparative DTM, too, though. There are no guarantees in tomato growing.

Chris, it certainly is all about the flavor this year. I'm done chasing the hottest. This year it's about what goes well on my pizza. Looking forward to trying the Trinidad Scotch Bonnets.

Mark, I could'nt agree with you more, this year I am more interested in peppers for stuffing and taste. And also I am growing alot for landscaping this year.But HOT is good.

Wow! My husband thinks that I'm nuts with all the varieties I'm planning on growing this year. He obviously doesn't know that this is modest. You've given me some homework to do. I need to look up all the different varieties other people are growing so I can learn more about them. I feel like a newbie when it comes to hot peppers despite having been gardening for several years now.

So for all you pepper growers out there, is that the only thing you grow or do you grow big gardens with flowers & other veggies too?

booberry85, I have been growing a small garden maybe 20x20 with a few toms and radishes, corn (never have any luck with the corn) and some small quantities of some others. But this year I am making another garden spot 100x50 approx. and am going to try my hand at watermelons (10 var.) and somewhere around 10 to 15 var. of tomatoes. There are so many tomatoes to choose from though. I have 70 varieties to choose from and I still have not made up my mind.

I purchased mine from Terra Time and Tide but I have to say the germination rate on the varieties I got from TT&T was much lower than the other two sources I had for chile pepper seed. That was true for many of the seeds I got from them, which were sprouted in the same flats as seeds from other sources.
I think I noticed Datil for sale at Beth's site while browsing yesterday..... Yup, here's the link:

sunkisst - thanks so much. I found them as well as a couple african birds eye at the Chilli Seed Co. I don't know anything about the company but I HAD TO HAVE DATIL.
LOL - I'll be ok. I hope they don't take too long to get here - I've already started my others. I'm only doing 13 hots and 3 sweet so compared to you guys I'm a lightweight.
Dale: May I suggest the sungold cherry tomato? I grew them last year and they were wonderful - a little prone to cracking if left on the vine but a really delicious cherry tomato that grew over 6' high in my garden. I also recommend the san marzano plum tomato.
Snow tonight and all I can think about is my garden!

well damn, all y'all who thought you had an unimpressive list this year can put away your "pepper envy". i'm only growing sweet cayenne,hot portugal, santiago hybrid, plain jalepenos(burpee) anaheim, scotch bonnet and habanero (from store bought seeds )and hungarian. pretty much standard issue stuff. with the aforementioned (is that a word ?) and the corn, elephant garlic and tomatoes i'm growing. i should be able to enjoy a nice salsa well into next summer !! good planting all !!

I don't know...thought they were Aphids at first, but maybe not. They're these really tiny off-white & light brown (mostly white) bugs on all the new growth. They're like about a mm or 2 long...they harass all new growth. :-\

What pesticides have you tried? Are the plants outside? I often have problems with plants while they are inside but the pests natural enemies seem to control them outside.

fiedlermeister: I've tried Liquid Sevin & Ortho Max 100. The Ortho works a bit better, but still doesn't get rid of enough of them to make a difference with the plants. They are outdoors. I have a few spiders lurking that are probably helping get rid of them, but they're probably getting full cuz there's a lot! =) I wanted to get some Rose Defense/Neem Oil for those pests, but just can't seem to find any & by the time I do, they might not be recoverable. The one in the tan mid-sized pot by itself (with kebab sticks) seems to be doing the best at fighting back. The midget one seems to be doing ok as well, but the one in the big tan pot is always coeverd with the things.

I don't usually use those poisons but if they aren't killing them I don't know what to suggest.

Orange Bell-seeds saved from a store bought pepper, so who knows what it will be
Cayenne-From Burpee mix
Hot Cherry-from Burpee mix

I have one Cherry that is growing in as pot and is absolutely covered with fruits and flowers. I cant wait til they start turning red because it is going to look like Christmas in my garden!! :) Plus I cant wait to eat them too LOL!

Heres my lineup:
7 pot
Scotch Bonnet Yellow and Red
Fatalli
Bhut Jolika
Austrian Lanterns
Thai red and yellows
Poblano

I have grown 100s of varities over the last 15 years and these get me everything I need. I tried the scorpions last year, they look cool and are very hot but didn't make good sauce and the Bhut dry better and just as hot for my powder. Am trying the 7 pot/pod for the first time, we'll see if they make back to next years lineup.
Bhut Jolikas best for powder.
Fatalli makes such a so much better mash for pepper sauces I don't even fool with mashing anything else, except for a few scotch bonnets. Got have a few jars bonnet sauce.
Austrlain lanterns made in back in this years lineup, what a great pepper to eat fresh, awsome smell and taste and HOT.
Got have my thais. Love taking the to the local Thai place getting the cook in my food, plus i make this soy/honey/garlic sauce with them.
Pablanos obiviously for my rellanos.
Thats all I need to keep me happy:)

We planted many seeds of each, but only got the 10plants. The cayenne that were supposed to be on the list never germinated. The living plants are all just starting to flower now. Time is getting short!

Does anyone have a source for Sweet Datil or one of the seasoning peppers (St. Lucia or St. Martin's), or have seeds to sell/trade? If so, please let me know! (Groovy1? Did you save seed from last year's harvest?)

I noticed quite a few of you are growing Hungarian Hot Wax.
I put in 50,000 plants a year and the two strands I recommend are Stoked F1 from Harris and my favorite Inferno from Rupp.

wow... i'm not growing near the amount of stuff as people above. I'm growing some habanero's and both red and green bell peppers.
