Yay!!! My Carribean Red Habs have started germinating!

Sorry, i'm just too excited not to share this...lol. The Carribean Red Habs are one of about 7 new peppers (all heirlooms) that i'm growing this year. After the oh so painful wait for them to germinate, they have finally started to do so about 2 days ago! =) I have 4 wee baby CRH seedlings so far. I imagine i'll be potting them up sometime mid to late next week, if not sooner. I also have a few Sweey Yellow Stuffing pepper seeds that germinated too.

Batboy, I've grown both the Peruvian White Hab and the White Bullet Hab. Here's how I got them to germinate (and here's how I am suggesting that you do it). Get two paper towels, a spray bottle with some water, a ziplock bag or a small tupperware container, and a source of warmth/sunlight. Take the paper towels and lay them out flat. Spray the towels a little (just drip some water on them if you don't have a spray bottle). Put the seeds on them and moisten the towel so that it is damp but not too wet (or too dry). Fold the towel over the seeds. Put the towel in either a tupperware or a ziplock bag. Put the tupperware or ziplock bag on top of a decent source of warmth, like a refrigerator or something along those lines, and leave it in indirect sunlight for a few hours a day (not direct! They'll cook). Basically, if you don't see a lot of condensation on the walls, it's not in a warm enough spot. So you know, if you do have grow lights, they get pretty warm (about 95 degrees) on top. Perfect for putting tupperware containers or cells on top of. Don't put the ziplock on the warmest part of the grow-light though, they'll get too hot. Once they germinate, put them in your cups with the soil, transplant in 8 weeks to a 14 inch pot and let 'er grow. I'll tell you this: my white habs were HUGE! One plant took up more space than two of any of my other plants, and Chris is correct, there had to be 400 pods on the plant. Ridiculous.

Planted it in ground about 3 foot high & as wide. First green fruits were jalapeno shaped so I was disappointed & trimmed it back. The fruit ripened to a orangy red & its only about 1 1/2 long x 3/4 in wide 3 sided profile with rounded tip. Oh its hotter than the carribean red ouch & smells like a jalapeno noy a chinese only the juice on the knife made the dish tongue burning hot. I can handle the CR very well This was sold as a chocolate hab but I knew something was up as the leaves didn't look right Either its a cross or something else Here is a link that might be useful:

Ripen the naga, if you can't wait for that give em the CR. CR might not be as hot as naga but even with my high tolerance it's incredibly hot. Get video or pics at least. I love the guys that claim "Oh, I can eat that, no problem". They bite into and say "this is nothing" then about 30-45 seconds later they start to sweat, turn red, and hiccuping. Asking for milk or bread (or water if they are a true poser). Nice plants trfanatic. That pic makes my mouth (and eyes) water. =P -HabBob

Cool! Exciting time of the year :)

I've been easy this year. Started 72 Orange Habs. About 40 of them have popped up so far. I am expecting somewhere in the 90% germination rate. I am definitely only keeping 20 of them (sure, sure!)

I just got 1 sprout today of one Habanero called 'Big Sun Scotch Bonnet'...thats a type of Hab. isnt it? Or are the Scotch Bonnets considered to be different? This is suppose to be a very big yellow one,and very very hot! So...time will tell.

Too much enthusiasm. I have pounds of Red Carribean peppers in my freezer that I have no plans to use. Also, chocolate habs, mushroom habs, orange habs, etc. Lately, the only hot peppers I use are Bhut Jolokia and Tobago (Tobago heat varies a lot from plant to plant).

My 6th (and last) Red Savina, planted 8 Feb, finally popped up this morning. The Pequins and Jolokias in the same tray have not done anything yet! :-(

Congrats Steve, mine too....I planted 5 and 4 are up, along with 4 limon chiles, 1 Hinkelhatz and 1 Bhut.....not sure why the low germination on those last two. I also just seeded some Datil, Guam Boonies, Tabasco, and Cayennes....don't you just love spring planting?!!

Thanks, all. I now have about 20-25 wee pepepr seedlings that I need to pot up asap! =) They gerimated like crazy over the past week & are now all starting to get close to outgrowing the germination station.

It's nice to see others excited about the sprout. Besides the kids, no one at home seems to care about the thought of planting a seed and watching it grow. I dread the day the common person has no idea how to raise a garden.

Ok, I got about an 80% germination rate on all 5 rows of peppers. Good enough for me, I guess, since I started way more plants than I will need. =) Anyways, I took the dome off of the germination station & removed it from the heating pad and put it under light. Anything else I should do? I don't want to remove them from the germination station until they've rooted in it well & grown a bit for 2-3 weeks. I ask because this is the first year i've started them with this method (heated germination station). If I remove them from it now & pot them up to cups, then they'll go through transplant shock & not grow for a week or so & I don't want them to go through that stage yet. It will be fine to keep them in the plug holes or whatever they're called for another 2 weeks or so, right?

Yeah I would leave them alone for about two weeks after they sprout, maybe 3 weeks, then pot them up. Depends on variety, and how large the seedlings are getting ect.

Planted jalapeno, regular habeneras, and red savina all at the same time... 1/24/10. The red just popped up a couple days ago. The jalapeno and habenera are already on their third set of leaves. Almost gave up on the red savina! Glad I didn't dump the cups and start over. All same soil, same light, same planting tray.... red just took awhile.

Probably plant a second round tonight.

I can't imagine red savinas not getting eaten up. Little bits mixed into my hamburger or a sliver in my pea soup. Chili/mexican food goes without saying. Gave some savina powder to friends and they sprinkle it on their morning eggs.

Sungold tomatoes planted same day (1/24) are already 8 inches tall!

Sweet, bunny! Let me know how those Sungold taste. =) I started some, but only about 2 weeks or so ago. They're like 1-3 inches tall, depending upon plant.

CRH is my fav hot pepper
I had a 2 yr old laden w fruit stolen from my yard last year.
How sad.
I got 2 more plants from armstrong as they do take a while to grow from seed but they are heavenly fire

Sweet. =) Yea, mine are still small, but 2 things: I just this past weekend potted them up to 16 oz cups & also we haven't had good heat here yet that peppers like. I'm looking forward to them though! I had 5 out of 6 cells germinate, so I have 5 small seedlings now.

I've grown Sungold in a container for two years now....
it is sweet and delicious, fairly low acid, and attractive.
Few make it into the house.
