My 15' Sabal Palmetto planting

My new Sabal Palmetto is nicely curved I got it for $300 because the person didnt want it 'cuz it curved, I said I will gladly take it! well here it is...

Hi,

Nice VA property and healthy Sabal Palmetto. The top will level off over the years. Did they discount it for the curve?

I hope new comers to the site note that this is the season to plant your palms - not Aug/Sept.

What's the pups name?

I actually like the curved Sabals a lot more than the straight ones especially when they are leaning toward a water feature like a river or pond. And I think they are usually a little more expensie when curved then when straight so you got a very good deal (even a straight sabal for $300 at that size is a great deal). When it gets a little older it will look really nice!
Your pindo is looking great too.
You have a very nice dog too! What breed is it?

I am growing many 15 to 23 foot Sabal palms (origin: SC & FL) in my yard and there are hundreds and probably thousands of seeds all over the ground and still on the palms that I have no use for. Those seeds have naturalized in my yard and are growing little seedlings almost as weed. I can send you up to 10 seed for free if you mail a SASE. 10 seeds per person. Also I am open for a trade to some other seeds that I don't have, for instance Stewartia pseudocamellia or Dypsis decipiens, etc.

Alex- You are right, the more I think about it. The leaves are stiffer on a minor. I have know doubt that what I have are palmettos. I know it will be a looong time before they form a trunk. Will the fact that there are two in one pot going to impeed that process? thanx, Andy

Ferti-lome Root Stimulator I've used it with smaller palms but would be beneficial with larger ones as well. I've also read that if you pre-cut the roots before removing it, it will have time to make new roots before actually transplanting. Randall in SC

Islandbreeze is correct. However. SOME sable minor's in "habitat", IE in thier natural environment, which is coastal wetlands from extreme SE Virginia, on down through the carolina's, GA, and into FL, they CAN produce stout drunks of a few feet. Here are a couple of photos of Sabal Minor in habitat. The second photo shows just how big they can get over a very long period of time in ideal conditions. Looks good. Curved ones are usually more money and not less! I installed a 15' Sabal Palmetto in January. It's been in the ground for going on 18 weeks now and is putting out some decent growth the past few weeks since we warmed up...

I paid a whopping $50 for it! They can be had pretty cheap here in Florida... I installed it myself, but they will sell you a 15+ footer and install it for $150.

haha thanks everyone yes shes a 4 week old pup. shes a English Retriever (had a golden and passed in january) Her name is Irie (Jamaican term...) yes i love the sabals that curve much more I am going to S.C. to get about 25 Sabals and a few Pindos and That is actually my mothers house I am fixing her yard up and she is getting a pool installed next month and i am changing her back yard into a tropical look and thats the start! shes happy and so im going to get a lot more... Statenisl- I got it from a friend who got it from a nursery who didnt like it after it was installed because the curve so gave it to me for cheaper... the nursery only has 15' and larger. i am looking though they are expensive here that was a good price, I find Pungo palms and such to be very expensive. Anyway I will def. post update pics and nice sabal jayinfl what was your method of installing it? yeah I know they are cheap as can be down there! well thanks aain everyone talk soon -Justin in VB

I dug out the hole the same depth as the tree had been originally been growing, slid it in with some help, and then tied a rope to it and my truck to fully erect it. I then took the hose and packed it as I added soil. I built a pretty good berm around it before adding the pine bark to retain moisture. I watered it 2 times per week while it was cool weather (to the top of the berm, probably 15 gallons) and then, once it warmed up, I have been giving it water about 3 times per week. Sabals will thrive when watered properly... no standing water, but plenty of water in well drained soil and they take off, or at least mine always have.... :)

You've got a nice looking Sabal there... keep us informed as to how it does over the summer months and good luck! If everything goes well, You should see some growth within the next couple of months or so with the warm weather.

Here's one showing the new growth that just started after about week 13... there are 2 more spears coming out that are not visible in this pic.
