Aji Lemon Drop and Aji Pineapple same or different?

I must have gotten a bad batch of seed or something, because while all my other peppers are growing along just fine, these Lemon Drop just keep failing. The first set got moldy, the second set had a bleach bath, but still only a couple came up. Those that came up have been stuck inside their seed coat for over a week with no cotyledon showing at all, which generally seems to be a death sentence. I really just wanted to get one plant to see how it compared to my Aji Pineapples, so I don't want to keep trying if there isn't something special about the LDs compared to the Ps. Can anyone help me out?

As an aside, I also noticed that the peppers I grew from seed I saved germinated faster and have more vigor than the ones grown from last year's left over seed. Is that because my saved seed are fresher? Cheers, and thanks for any help you can give!

If I have seedlings that come up with the seed case still covering the cotyledon leaves, I let it go for a day or two and if it isn't able to shake it, then I give it a hand. You have to be very careful though so as not to damage the seedling and the cotyledon leaves in particular. You may need to find some steady hands and use a tweezers and knife to pry it apart. None of mine did that this year come to think of it. They all come up clean.

I have noticed that Lemon Drop takes longer to germinate(and longer to mature)than others I have grown. I don't know if that's the case with all baccatums.
From what I've read, the only difference between the two seems to be higher production with Lemon Drop, with both of them having the citrusy flavor.

hello if memory serves me correctly the word "Amarillo" is the spanish word for "yellow" i have seen the pepper advertised "AJI AMERILLO"(yellow) so i would say its the same pepper in terms of labeling, their is however a close relative which is the "AJI PERU"' its not quite as large as the yellow but taste basiclly the same,the aji yellow is not as hot as the lemon drop and is larger and generally fatter in appearance, there is another called "AJI PANCA" ITS THE SAME SIZE AS THE YELLOW AND TASTE BASICLLY THE SAME BUT THE PANCA IS BLACK ON THE OUTSIDE AND GREEN ON THE INSIDE, the red tint could be due to cross pollination at some point but not the only reason, im not an expert on the subject but i have seen all these peppers enough to know which are which, THEY ARE MY FAVORITE!! hope this helps a little thanks your friend joe

The seeds I have from the chile institute are Baccatums. Thats according to the pack lable-I just looked. I don't think they sell the C.Chinense. Baccatums have gold specks in the flower. See the chileman for Lemon Drop to see flower. Lemon drop is the same thing as the Baccatum you ordered ,just a different name I think.Possibly a different strain,I think they are the same thing. I personally think the pods are a lot different in the Chinense-fat ,more cone shapped , not long skinney. I guess it depends on the pic you find... Here is a link that might be useful: Lemon drop

Baccatums I grew this year were Lemon Drop, Aji Amarillo, Birgit's Locoto, Aji Santa Cruz, Bulgarian Teardrop, Brazilian Starfish and Aji Habanero. BRAZILIAN STARFISH I'll probably photograph today, and then taste it for the first time. Real real late the pods started ripening a lot at once. LEMON DROP and BIRGIT'S LOCOTO are my favorites for looks and flavor. Birgit's is the most productive variety I've seen. In fact, I'm no longer gonna' grow Serranos as my workhorse (eat 'em unripe) pepper, because the unripe Birgit's tastes better and is much more plentiful. And when they ripen, they taste just as great as Lemon Drops, or better. AJI HABANERO has a really beautiful pod, slightly larger and oranger than Lemon Drop. There's practically zero heat, repeat: practically zero heat. I'll grow it again next year because I'd miss not having it around. BULGARIAN TEARDROP was the very first pepper plant to start looking nice in my garden. The pods developed a nice pumpkin shape early, and were an off-white color for a long time before turning orange. When I gave little bags of peppers to friends, the Bulgarian Teardrops were the most elegant in the bunch. AJI AMARILLO I grew a different strain from last year, and the new ones have humongous pods that still haven't ripened. AJI SANTA CRUZ I grew at a location far from my house, where I never managed to commute to often enough. None of the peppers I grew there came out well, but I did harvest some Aji Santa Cruz's and one thing I'll say is the pods do grow big, with grooves like an Asian cucumber. Several people traded or gave me seeds for most of these, and I thank them and hope they read this.

OK t, I went to the garden last night and did a 'tasting ', Limon first, then Hot Lemon. Lemon was hotter AND tastier, last night :-). Made meat loaf today, went to the garden (in the rain) for some Nardellos to go in the meat loaf and grabbed some Limons, Hot Lemons, and Omnicolors along with the Nardellos did another 'tasting' WITH the meatloaf, first a Hot Lemon, then a Limon, then 2 more Hot Lemons. I must admit I preferred the Hot Lemons over the Limons last night and today. The Hot Lemons are described as 'citrusy' tasting, and I have to agree with that description, they are indeed citrusy, along with heat on a scale of 8 (at least last night and today :-)). Limons are not 'citrusy' when compared side by side to a Hot Lemon, IMO. In fact, last night and today they were kinda bland compared to the Hot Lemon. Fickle, ain't I? I only had a couple red Omnicolors (like I said they get eaten), there's a kazillion out there stuck in this purple striped stage and I'm doubting they're gonna have a chance to ripen before a predicted freeze next week. In this stage they taste exactly like an Aji Crystal in it's cream colored stage; when they're red they have a fruity raspberry like flavor, and good heat to boot. I REALLY like Omnicolor. But I waffle and am fickle too.

I had a few come up with the seed shell attached I've pulled them off and actually on one tore off 1/2 the cotyledon leaves in the process, the plant is doing just fine now on second set of true leaves. If they will die in the shell anyways, does not hurt to try and pull them off.

Well higher yields sounds good, but on the other hand I have 7 Pineapples already plus the one overwintering from last year...

The thing about pulling the seed coat off the cotyledons is that they aren't even showing, so if it tears at the point of attachment there will be no cotyledons and no growing tip, just a very sad stem. But if these are so similar to the Pinepples that only yield is a difference, then I won't get too het up over it. There are other things that need starting and tending. Thanks for all the moral support!

Try pulling the seed coat apart before pulling it off. Maybe a pair tweezers to hold one side and pull it apart with a knife or needle or something like that. The seed coating shouldn't be "attached" once it sprouts, it just isn't opening up enough for the cotyledon to pop out.

Well, the bad news is that seedling microsurgery failed. I think the stem got constricted at the point of exit, because soon as I touched it with the tweezers the whole "head" fell right off. The good news is that a more deeply buried seed seems to be pushing through and I think I see cotyledons! Woot!

Thanks Bruce! I hope so too. I'm working on expanding my growing into a real business, so I won't have time to fool with fussy seedlings from a "hobby" plant soon. Hear that, Lemon Drops? Shape up or ship out!
