I went to my local H.D. today to get something else and I saw all these tall palms from a distance.Once I got out of the truck I noticed they were Queen Palms.I couldent believe how cheap they were,3 gallons that are 10ft tall were $6.98 and 5 gallons that were atleast 15ft for 16.98.I know there not hardy for here but my friend who I have been teaching about landscaping and plants bought me two 3 gallons. You cant ask for a better friend,he knows im not working, and I love palms, and I cant afford to buy any.He dident even buy any palms for himself.I just thought I would tell everyone how cheap the palms are for there size.A 10ft palm tree for $6.98.Wow :)

Not a bad size at all, you got to post some pics! I have a large queen palm about 6 years old from a seedling (newly sprouted seedling). It would probably be taller if it wasnt neglected so badly in its early years, but now it gets good care an grows quick. They are nice fast growing palms but extremely light weight so it isnt too hard to take in every winter as long as the soil is kept dry for a few weeks before its time to go in for the winter and for a few weeks before it goes out for the winter.
You have a good friend to buy you something just to be nice.

    Good luck!

These are among my favorite palms. I have three of them in large tubs. They overwinter in a big garage that is minimally heated in the winter (I just keep the temps above freezing). They are well worth the money.

Welcome to AZ and to the forum. We sure hope you post often. It sounds like you've gotten the information you need from mangled--great information as usual. Despite swearing I'd never buy queen palms since they don't LOVE it here the way so many other palms do, I did purchase some awhile back and they've done well. Mine at only about 9 feet tall and they get ten gallons of water twice a week, plus palm fertilizer in early spring, late spring, and then mid-summer. That *should* help keep the yellow fronds away but you never know. They are not the easiest palm to keep happy here (the way Mexican and California/Desert and date and pygmy palms are) but they sure are lovely when happy. I would never recommend them to friends who like super low maintenance plants, but I do a lot of things I wouldn't recommend. :) Good luck and keep us posted! Take care, Grant

Queen Palm repotting, soil and depth?

Sand can get a little heavy so I think that the perlite and soil are your best bet. I dont know what ratio you should put it in, but a majority of it should be soil because these palms dont really like to be very dry, but also want soil that drains pretty quickly. Maybe you can cover the exposed roots with mulch which would lower your needs for watering it and also cover up the exposed roots from the hot sun. I would take it out as soon as the treat for frost has passed and given shade at first and then slowly accumulated to the sun. I would fertilize as soon as it goes outside because sometimes the leaves get damagedd by the sun so it will need to grow quickly to replace the leaves. Good luck! -Alex

Mike- I can elaborate further when I have more time, but my protection (and friend who got one of the trachies shown) is similar in sophistication to most. Wood frame (2x2s with 1x4 cross members), xmas lights, CFL bulb, thermocube, etc. Bubble wrap insulation over old bed comforters, which is over chicken wire for overall support. Plywood roof. Big tarp covering the whole thing on top of that. FYI on price/size in Ebay auctions: Mine are bigger than the ones listed in the auctions, negotiated outside of Ebay. Shipping was more because of the size. About $100 each for shipping. (not $65)

    Hi
I sprouted about 50 seeds in 01 for some dwarfing experiments. Those that I root pruned are now just over 8 feet, those root pruned in the ground about 12 while those in the ground are 20 feet and seeding for the first time. So it is possible to Bonsai a palm lol,
The only thing I don't like about them is the persistant fronds you have to climb up there and whack them off they hold on forever .
good luck with you new ones!!! gary

Wow, those are some great sizes. Mine is a little bit smaller than the larger ones, but not as healthy because it got some burn from the sun (after being indoors). It should make a really nice potted palm for you!

I got one planted last night and im going out now to plant the other one.Im not going to put them in pots,I've got to many potted palms now, plus there to tall.Hey Laura,my friend also happens to be my neighbor,we have been friends since 4th grade. He says my yard looks like a oasis of palms, everyone in my neighborhood calls me the palm man.I have people stop here when they see me out in the yard working, and they say are those palm trees?and banana trees?People around here are just now learning about cold hardy palm trees, and bananas, atleast most people are.Dont get me wrong but I kinda like the attention, and teaching people about plants in general,Im no specialist by far.I guess watching gardening by the yard all those years have paid off.My other neighbor said those queen palms look like a tall grass, that about tells you how much people around here know about palms.By the way laura, those seedlings are still living and growing, nothing from those seeds yet,but I've got my fingers crossed, and praying.I've learned alot from all of you to,thanks to all of yall for answering my questions, and giving me advise :)

    Randy,

Don't give up on those seeds...put them somewhere in the sun and forget about them (Especially the pindo seeds)
They will finally sprout when you least expect them.
Some of my seeds (Pindo) came up the next year after planting them...go figure!!!

Let's see some pictures of your new palms!!!

I'll bet those palms are beautiful!!

P.S. Where was that pic taken with you and that great big (Gigantic) Pindo?

    Take Care,

Queen palms are not a self-cleaning palm and do not thrive in South Florida soils. For those reasons, they fell out of favor as a landscaping palm here about 10 years ago. They require copious amounts of fertilizer to remain green. They still are used in Central Florida, though.

Just purchased three today during my lunch hour. $6.98 ea! Great deal! Strange though, their other palms are somewhat pricy. There must have been a surplus of Queens this year.
Does anyone have any good tips for potting and care of ?

bamatufa,I planted mine in the ground, there to tall for the cellings in my house.I can almost quess why there so cheap. They found some nursery going out of business and bought everything they had for a certain price if the nursery owner sold them all of them.He or she probley needed the money bad,H.D. probley got them at a still so they now can sell them at what we consider cheap. Laura that picture was taken in San Juan, Jan.1996 at a workers house we hired when I stayed there for three years doing construction work at the Hyat Resort,it had been hit by a hurricane. He said it was 75yrs old and,he said his dad had planted it when he was a kid(his dad).We stayed on one side while remodeling the other,it was the best job I ever had.The resort had 3 casinos,7 restaurants, and 2 discos, and a 18 hole golf course, and a bar everywhere you looked even in one of the 7 swimming pools. It was still open while we were working there,it had 7 floors and 700 rooms.I did all the corian counter tops for the lobby and each room,it was a big job!!!All the coconut trees were shredded pretty badley, but all the pindos he had on his property dident even show any damage, that was the oldest and biggest one he had. That's where I saw my first pindo palm.Talk about first encounters :)

That's what im basically doing with mine. When you can get a 8ft palm tree for $6.98,and they want $15 for a boston fern.I'll take the palm tree anyday.I ment to post pictures of mine in the ground but it's to dark now to get a good picture.I've been working in my yard all day long everyday this week.I'm redoing my whole front and side yard, putting in new planting beds and planting plants or moving plants.I'll post pictures later when I finally get finished.Sorry Laura I will take some pictures of my 2 Queen Palms for you tomorrow.I keep trying to forget about those seeds but you know how it goes when you plant seeds and are waiting for them to come up. It cant happen fast enough. Thanks again for all you have done for me,I wont forget it :)

    Hey Randy,

I certainly know what you are talking about when you want something to grow!!! Especially when you have to check on it several times a day!! We all on this forum are probably guilty of some sort of this obsesive behavior!!! I will admit that sometimes when I come home late at night from work, I will walk the yard with a flashlight looking for any change from my palms and or my Plumerias. (some of us on this forum who also visit the Plumeria Forum understand how we watch for any activity!!! LOL

You are so welcome!!! I enjoy and hope that some of the seedlings and seeds grow well for you!!! The funny thing...is that I'm back in Hilton Head this weekend!!!
How are the seedlings from HH doing? Let me know if you want me to go hunting for more!!! LOL You should see the people watch me around the pool area and or just walking down the street!!! They stop to see what I'm doing...people are so funny... they have to ask, just to see if their are missing out on something!!! Really makes me chuckle!!!

Whenever you get a chance to post those pics of your new palms will be great. No worries if you have other things to do...but I would really like to see what you have done with your yard...sound like you have really done some great work on the front and the back!!!

I love San Juan Puerto Rico...especially around the Luquillo Beach area...they have an old Coconut tree plantation that was either sold or abandoned...the palms still are so beautiful on that part of the beach. You say that you worked on the Hyatt? is that close to Esla Verde? The Ritz Carlton is near that area. That was the first place that I had my first encounter with palms too! (30 years ago !!!) I can understand how that palm caught your attention!! That was a beauty!!!! Sounds like you really enjoyed yourself while in PR...did you get down to Old San Juan? Maybe some more jobs like that may come your way soon!!! Good things happen to good people!!!

Take Care Randy aka butiaman :)

I also know what you mean when want something to grow and you cant help but look at it every time you go outside. I watch my plumerias all the time and waiting for those inflos. to slowly come up. Sometimes I go outside 4 or 5 times a dat to specifically see how its doing. Lately Ive been watching my plumeria divine inflo. slowly come up (and I mean slowly). It probably wont flower until june and there as been an inflo. on it since march! I also watch my palms all the time and have recently been watching the new leaves coming out of my trachys. And I watch my cannas a lot this time of the year because they are all sprouting up now. I watch them again when summer comes and the first blooms open. Im glad Im not the only one who will watch there plants to see there growth progress!

Try to get some pics when you can, but dont stress if you cant. It seem like you have very nice queen palms!

Good luck, enjoy the warm weather!

H.D. and Lowes both do this,I ordered two sabal Palmettos from my local store, they called one of there stores in Savannah,GA.and they had them and all I had to do is tell them what size I wanted,a 3 or 5 gallon. The great thing is you dont even have to pay anything up front. They call you when they get them in,and they will hold them for 7 days,if you need a little time to pay for them. They wont put them out with there other plants so somebody else could snag them.I ment to tell you you have to go to the customer service desk to order them.

Hi, that's what I have, queen palms, love thos pics from HD. i love this forum!! I'm getting hooked on growing palms ever since last fall a nighbor gave me 2 queen? palms,i don't know 13'-15' tall and I wintered them indoors, they're doing great. Can't wait to get them outside. I have since purchased a small European Fan Palm while in Fla, and another one maybe a Pindo, and at WalMart the other day got a Cat Palm on the clearance rack for $5. These are about 3ft. ttall or so. I love them and look at them often! babying them, taking them out during the day and bringing them in at night. Not the big ones, they'll go out for the summer in a wk. or two.
And I love the Plumeria forum too, i'm trying to root a cutting now, about 3ft. that I bought at a flea market in fla. can't wait!
Thanks all for sharing pics, experiences etc.!

I hope you learn a lot from this forum and lm looking forward to seeing the things you manage to grow. Somethings will do great and some things wont, but you definitely learn a lot along the way!

    Good luck!

I have a few questions about Queen palms.Everything I've read on them says there only cold hardy in zone 9b or 10a.That's on diffrent websites, like Daves Garden and various others, but I've seen post on here where there growing them in Savannah,GA.and there only a half a zone warmer than I am.I think I remember even one where someone was growing one in Tennessee, with protection of course.Just how cold hardy are they?I read that you can protect them by wrapping just the trunk with lights and a tarp,it said dont worry about the fronds because they grow so fast,Does this sound possible or correct? If you use this method, would you want to cut the fronds off or leave them alone? If you cut the fronds off wouldent you want to cover the top of the trunk also in winter? Why im asking is because I as you know I have 2 of them planted in the ground and I think there one of the most tropical looking palms there is besides a coconut palm.Any advise will be helpful.

  • tropicalzone7

I think they are probably best as zone 9 palms. Savannah is more of a zone 8b-9a with most winters being a 9a by the coast which is probably why they do so well there. They can handle some cold and mine have seen in the 20s without damage, but if they get too much damage they dont recover quickly at all. the leaves on mine are sunburned and I will probably have to wait until july before they are replaced by nice, healthy leaves.

    Good luck!

I know I am very late, but just wondering how have your queen palms done? I am planning on planting some and protecting them with mulch, xmas lights and burlap. Planting at a southern exposure. I won't cover the fronds tho. Do you think that will work?
