I live in northwest Iowa and have yellow tree peonie that is beautiful each spring. Mine is 5 years old...I got it when I worked at garden center and plant was going get thrown out so I took it and planted it in fall. That was the first time I had ever grown one so it has been trial and error. I mulched with lots of leaves in winter, fertilize it when it first emerges in spring and after done blooming. Keep it dead-headed but do NOT cut it back. Old plant is what comes back and peonie's trees take LONG time to get 7-9 ft. tall. Mine was about 5 tall last year and had about 50 huge lemon yellow, very fragrant blooms and then huge storm hit our area and part our maple split and fell on it and crushed it. This spring it's only about 3 foot tall and only has about 10 little buds on it. It will be blooming next week...the same time as iris and columbine. Mine has survived a lot of harsh winters so I don't think you will have much problem. Main thing too...buy one at decent greenhouse and make sure you read description for hardiness. Also best time to plant one is fall but still early enough now to start a new plant. I love mine...look forward to it's large, scented flowers each spring. One of my favories.

The only advice is to plant it deep 6 or so inches below the surface. What you have is the nurse root of a grafted tree peony. Plant in an area that will not be disturbed for several years and mark it well. If you are lucky the tree peony stem that should be inside the bundle of roots will send up a new shoot. I might also ask for a replacement tree peony from the landscape company if you had pointed out that you did not want that plant disturbed. If you told them nothing you will have to remember next time you had landscaping done. You should of course point out to the company what a tree peony is so they hopefully will be more careful in the future.

Thanks Alina. Question...you said; It is recommended to plant them deep enough to stimulate root growth above grafting point. How deep above the graft site do you plant a TP? I'm going to plant my 2 TP's directly in the yard. Would you use the potting prep in the yard? I have some prep soil I use when planting roses. Iplanning mixing that in with the yard soil. I don't want to be pessimistic...but I'm not too confident about these. In my old house I inherited glorious peonies. No problems! Now since we moved 7 years ago I've tried numerous times planting new peonies and have had very limited luck. Botrytis blight has been an issue. I've been careful not to plant them too deep, etc. Prayed and danced and nothing has worked. sigh......... I literally ordered these TP's by mistake on the Park's website! I had looked at them online while I was placing an order for some roses and other flowers. After I checked out and paid I read closer and realized I had added 2 TP's! Now the challenge begins!

Bradarmi, Fall care for intersectional peonies is the same as for the herbaceous parents of this group so the stems should be cut back to the ground. I generally find tree-peony-like buds on the stems that appear to be perennial in nature however I have never seen one of these buds to survive the winter. These above ground buds can be used for grafting onto herbaceous roots and some of these grafts have survived for me. Tree peony roots should work for grafting also however I have not tried that. I sure would think that roots of intersectional peonies would also work. Generally I don't cut mine all the way to the ground. I, being the optimistic sort that I am, can't seem to bring myself to remove those buds. I cut the stems to just above the top bud in hopes that these will come out the following spring. As I said earier, I have not found any of these buds or stems to survive yet but this next spring I will be checking again to see if any survive.
