yes i love tybee island!took my wife and kids to the crab shack!loved it.Savannah is the official most beautiful city i ever been,i will go back hopefully next year

Next time you are in Raleigh, visit Pullen Park. There are (or were anyway) quite a few very tall Windmill palms there last time I was there but that was also about 8 years ago. If you google "pullen park palm trees" a good number of photos of them come up. When I was there there was also TONS of seedling windmills growing all over the place as well. So many people grow this palm from the mid Atlantic states, southward it would not shock me to see them start to naturalise in some areas especially from South Eastern Virginia southward. Maybe even in the DE/MD/NJ coastal areas as well. Nice pics! Thank you for sharing!

Hi Laura, sorry I missed your post, you posted just 1 minute before I made my post haha! The beaches in bermuda were definitely the nicest I have ever seen. There were plenty of large rocks around the beaches, but the sand itself was really soft and fine. The beaches around my area dont compare at all! Definitely one of my favorite vacations even though I was only there for 5 days. My plumerias are doing really well. The cuttings you sent me are growing really well, the Scott Pratt is doing especially well, it put out a ton of growth this summer. The California sunset is doing well too, but I think I will give it more sun so it grows a little faster! My largest plumeria is approaching 13 feet tall (pot included) and is now the tallest tropical plant in my yard (even larger than the Adondila I bought!)so it's going to be a real challenge finding a place for that one inside. It has 3 inflos on it now but I can only take pictures of the blooms from my upstairs window! It's about a week or 2 away from blooming. Looks like it's going to have to get cut back next spring as much as I hate having to do that to my plumerias! I havent posted too many pics of my plumerias this year because they all bloomed so well last year that this year there have been barely any blooms at all. My plumeria Divine put out 2 flowers from the inflo that it made indoors and it is just now starting to make another inflo. My Pretty Princess has always been a late one to bloom and it's inflo is still a good month away from blooming. I hope it blooms before it's too late! Hopefully it will be a warm fall and nmaybe next summer the plumerias will all have enough growth to bloom like crazy again. I hope your plumerias and tropicals are all doing well! -Alex

I had originally lived here from winter '89 to 95, then moved back to Arkansas. Snow followed me from up north to Brunswick. When I arrived in town, I had to drive the rest of the way to my house with my windshield down because my wipers had frozen, as had my windshield. That was the big record setter regarding snow. Then I moved back to Arkansas. I moved back to Brunswick again about 3 years ago, and it got down to 20* once that first winter. Then the next winter it got to 18* 2 different times very briefly, and all the television stations were going on an on about how that was the coldest it had been here in 100 years, blah, blah. So, their expertise is what I'm basing that on. I've documented every temp while I've lived here, but can't speak for prior times personally. It dipped to 26* once last winter, but that was the size of it. I'm praying for a miracle this winter because I planted several hundred more tender succulents and palms in my yard this year thinking that I would have no trouble covering them (I already cover a zillion things as it is). However, an unexpected career change a few weeks ago has ended my previous schedule of having all my days free to frolic about in the garden. So, don't know what I'll do this year. Regarding the dypsis, yes I'll cover them. The place I bought them from had them listed as 2-3 foot planted height. If they're even one foot tall, I'd be surprised. So, I'll protect them until they get bigger. Hoping to eventually phase out my majesty palms and replace with the dypsis. Majesties are such work. I got 3 of the 'silver queen' palms this spring, so we'll see how they do. I have a number of golden palms that I'm really anxious to get big and purty. The Lincoln dealership is here in Brunswick. There's one in Savannah, too, with queens? I rarely ever get to Savannah; however, I may be going there more often come the first of the year. Does anyone know where the old Sheraton would be in Savannah? I play the piano for a living, and a contractor friend recently bought it and is redoing it into some kind of club/resort kind of thing that I might play at maybe 3 times a week. When I'm heading north and get off 95 at the Savannah exit (the one right past that old outlet mall......I'm not sure what exit that is)and hook a right, I always notice that hotel on the left that has the queen palms. Been there quite a while now, I guess. Surprising because they're out in the open with no protection. Whatever exit that is, that highway then turns into Abercorn. And I remember seeing the sign for the Bamboo Farm several miles further down, but never visited. Speaking of, I have ended up spraying most of my bamboo with brush killer to kill it because it was spreading so rapidly. The black bamboo, sasa palmata 'nebulosa', sasa veitchii 'kima zasa', and the variegated pleioblastus auricomis is the only ones I mess with now, and may soon kill the veitchii, also. I'm also growing 3 of the everglades palms (acoelorraphe wrightii). Supposedly hardy to 20* maybe. We'll see!

When you visit Savannah, find a city owned parking garage (there are several) to park in. You can park all day for like $5 and you don't have to keep going back to feed the meter. If you do park by a meter, be prepared to feed it promptly and feed it often. DO NOT let it expire on you! You will get a ticket. The meter maids are very, very efficient. Savannah is a beautiful city. The time of year you are visiting is the perfect time to see it. Wear comfortable shoes, carry along some bottled water, and enjoy yourself. You can see the entire Historic District on foot if you are up to doing some walking. The local businesses will have good maps with walking trails marked on them. There are several companies that offer carriage tours which are another great way to see the city. Bring your camera, have a great visit, and remember that we do allow people to move here. Aubrey

Savannah is a very beautiful city.Those queens are looking much better than the ones in northern florida. And anyone who complains about Sabals being ugly should go to savannah, because those palms are far from ugly to me.

The coast really gives savannah a mild climate. Savannah actually parallels Bermuda which does have coconut palms and many other tropicals thanks to the vast ocean moderating the weather.

I also like those azaleas. Not tropical, but still beautiful flowers especially with all those nice live oak trees above them.

Thanks for posting those great shot and sharing your vacation.

Yup, I noticed the queen palms did well, probably b/c they are protected by the building close by and they are on the immediate coast.

How warm was the weather there?

I was looking at the pic again and noticed one of the queens is even fruiting!
I just checked the forecast and they are definitely on the warm side for the next few days (mid 80s), but friday does have a low of 48 as the cold front pushes through the area. Then the days look to be in the 70s.

I really like the pictures,and I love Savannah.It's about a 4hr drive from me,we use to go once a month just for the weekend.They tend to be around 10* warmer than me for winter temps.(night and daytime).It's funny how just 10* can make such a defference.In the summer we average about the same temps.I cant think of the name of the road there but it's suppost to be the longest palm lined street in the U.S.I have been thinking about moving there lately.I like the park in the square with the big water fountain and all the live oaks with the moss hanging in them.Thanks for the pictures,it brings back old memories.

Wow only 4 hours, its about 12 or 13 hours away from me! It seems like a nice place to live, mild weather, quiet, and right by the water. I tried to find out what the longest palm lined road is in the US, but I couldnt find anything on it. Thanks again for sharing your savannah pics with us.

It is a GREAT place to live and raise a family. I live 10 miles east of Savannah ( in between Tybee and downtown). I have had queen palms in ground since 2001....one is an absolute monster that literally dwarfs the one in the photos...we have lots of date palms around as well. Funny how "good" my giant queen looks when so many in Central Florida bemoan the "common" queen palm!

When I drive down the coast from Pennsylvania to Florida, I make it a point to book a hotel in Savannah for a stay. The first time I got there, I almost didn't make it to Florida :)

They do have a lot of great palm trees there!

hi everyone,i too find savannah the most beautiful city in the u.s.a. i believe the name of the palm lined road is victory boulevard and it is breathtaking.i wish i were there now.thank you all for sharing your reminisces....

the drive is too long to get to South FL in one run.

we stayed at the holiday inn express on Bay st across the street from River st,thats where all cool restaurants are at.We were one block away from reynolds square.Thats one of many squares

dear brooklyngreg,years ago i stayed in a place called the 'savannah country club'.it was a combo grand hotel and golf course,if i remember correctly and it was on the coast,very nice

Definitely try the "Mulbery Inn" or the Hampton on Bay St. Clean, upscale properties with excellent service.
