Ok,not a biggie post-but not often we get heavy April rain and the sun is out-a rainbow was someplace out there.

We only got a couple of sprinkles here and there. Spots underneath trees are dry still. It looks like you guys got hit pretty hard with rain huh?

On a side note, the triangle palms have been thinned out by the theory of the survival of the fittest. I left all 19 of the seedling out all winter long and although they all got some frost damage, five of them are still kicking and actively growing. The rest kicked the bucket. Why would I need 19 triangle palms anyway? lol. Five seems more reasonable.

When I checked weather.com, it shows that the temps have not been that bad, but who knows how long those "highs" were maintained? Since the middle of January, we've seen 4 days in the mid-70Â°s, 5 days of high 60Â°s, then the rain brought a week of 50Â°s. The "lows" have typically been in the mid 40Â°s, but it hit 33Â° one night. The enclosure is a good idea, I just hope no one at my association whines. So far, the foliage can take the temps, but it gets less sun this time of year. I'll head to HD or Lowes for a fix. My pineapples are thriving, my plumeria never dropped it's leaves and still has an inflo; it's ready to bloom.

King palms are much faster than howea, especially in places like the tropics (in the US thats southern florida and hawaii, where they are considered one of the faster growing palms). Although kings grow a little slower in california, they are faster than howeas which do really well in California (actually thats probably the best climate for Howeas) Australia has given cultivation many beautiful palms, and many can be grown in California pretty well. I do like howeas though, very similar look to coconuts without the troubles that one would give you in California's weather. Good luck!

Our home depot had some absolutely beautiful ! 1 had a trunk that was about 5 ft tall for $ 100 It got down to 37 degrees that night and when i went back the next morning it looked terrible ! Would have bought it that night if i had a place big enough inside to keep it.. In my experience they are very vulnerable trees they do not take windy days to good without looking frizzled and spread out... also they bend in the breeze relatively easy.. I think they would probaly be suited for zones 10+.. with a sheltered area from the wind or , as a houseplant I have 1 in a pot with about 2 ft of trunk and the wind realy plays havoc with it.. but so far so good !

I am just a homeowner and limited experience with queen, King, Foxtail, and other varieties. i live in San Diego….and know the total frustration of growning palms, citrus, and other trees that ’seem’ to struggle. First First…King palms and Foxtail palms and avocado trees MUST have ’acid’ soil 6.5 or so! Second, heavy clay is surely a ’death-nail’! Third…Southern California ’water’ is awful and is slow death to plant and people alike (chlorine, chlorimines, ammonia and other chemicals). And if you plant/desire to grow a King palm outdoors in full sun, i recommend digging a hole three times the pot size but not ’deeper’ and in that hole—a mixture of peat moss, compost, untreated wood chips, 10% native clay soil, and ’some’ outdoor potting soil. Why Why?….just my experience after $1000 of failures! Next…if you dont use ’treated’ water (bottled or a home system that doesnt contain ’salt’)…water only once a week about two gallon watering cantainer ’until’ established!!! You can ’tell’ if the palm has small slow growth on the center leaf-spike! Then continue only watering sparingly ’every week’ for all the Summer months. After, youll be happy and just forget about that palm and after six months buy a slow release fertilizer just for palms and do that every three months. Remember Remember…the Southern California water is your ’adversary’ so use it sparingly and cautiously and dont ’drown’ your King palms with that chemical water. It will ’adapt’ over time and wait for the short rainy Seasons and look glorious!

haha yeah. Thunder woke me up at around 1:30 AM. Really rare storm with lightning bolts and all.

Topher, sorry, the only reason i mentioned the triangles was because Stan and I had talked last year about trading some plants and he had expressed interest in the triangle palm seedlings. Stan is in a more mild microclimate so by letting him know that they lived through our 'central valley' winter, I was assuring him that if we went through with the trade, they would be completely hardy in his yard.

btw, Stan, that's one nice brugmansia. How tall do you think it is? mine just leafed out a bit over a month ago so i still have to wait for flowers.

Wow, rain in California! Thats becoming a rare event. Almost as rare as snow in Hawaii!!! LOL

Here in Fresno we got .75 of an inch of rain. That's more than 3 times more than what we received in the whole month of march (which is considered part of the 'rainy' season!)

Maybe I read the stats wrong but W.U. sez that Hayward has had .40 inches this month..seems low to me for all the times it has rained. Our usual whole month of April ave.runs about 1.30 inches.
J, The Brugs are Charles Grimaldi-usually are evergreen,every other year. This year a 33 and 34 defoliated them mostly. The tallest has reached about 14' with a nice sized triple trunk. But I prune them hard or they would shade much wider and right to the ground. And as you can see they have releafed and are blooming again.
And what I thought were Rhopalistylus palm seeds,came up Chamedorea microspadix. Nice,but not nearly as nice as the Shaving brush palms darnit.
