Uncovered the Washy today-nice growth over the winter pushing up some new leaves...

Also.....I wasn't very nice to this A.Americana,it saw 22F a few times last fall and was burned...then,
wheeled into the dark basement with no planter and kept in the dark-in spite of this it should recover
and will hopefully put out the usual 10-15 leaves this summer.

Heres a picture of the variegated Aloifolia,it gets an extra color this time of year with the cold and intense sun and ends up a tri-color Aloifolia......

One last thing,I checked on one of the Amorphophallus konjac and Philodendron "Hope",the corpse lily is still solid
and appears to have overwintered outside in the ground with a layer of mulch-the P.Hope is also solid and with a little luck
will sprout from the side or below near the root system...time will tell.....thanks for looking!

Hi. Wow that Washy looks great!!! I had a couple nights at 17F down here and many of the Washies that size browned out completely except the spear. You really know how to protect your palms!!!

At first I was thinking it was common field bindweed, but my bindweed leaves don't have that prominent white veining on the leaves and they aren't really heart-shaped like the leaf in your photo. If it blooms, though, and it becomes apparent that it is bindweed, pull out every bit quickly before seeds form or you'll still be pulling it out 20 years from now. There are many, many forms of bindweed, though, and I am sure I haven't seen all of them. I'm inclined to agree with Dorothy's belief that it may be one of the vining milkweeds. Look at the link below and see if it strongly resembles your plant. Even if your vine is not identical to the one in the link, it may be similar enough that it helps you identify yours as one of the vining milkweeds. Since the ladybugs are there eating the aphids, they are a non-issue at this point. Lady bugs are great garden helpers and aphids are one of their favorite foods. ha, b's mom -- I think of a backsplash because I am a hopeless *mosaic and tile addict*! : ) Guess you haven't seen my daughter's bathroom LOL. It's a riotous yet controlled explosion of Pratt & Larson seconds/overruns that I facemounted on mosaicmount and worked into the design of the entire room. I only have in-process photos, no current photos of it because my daughter is 14 and we don't have a housekeeper, iykwim. Anywhere I can tile I generally try to,and if I find some nice tile at a salvage, I have a tendency to buy it and then figure out where to use it somewhere down the road. It's even happened one or two times : ). I was actually thinking of wainscoting in the room, but I want to find a tile that is the same color as the paint. We actually have some two-or-three-fist-sized rocks of labradorite that we will have cut to make slices to work in somewhere, probably in the shower. I can't cut it because it fractures too easily. I may try to get the fabricator who has sold us the countertop piece to see if he can cut these rocks. I'll try to imagine the room without a backsplash...honestly, I've had bathrooms in other houses without a backsplash and it can work...I'll keep an open mind. I love the mirror frame idea to have that be the reference to the gold floor -- a combination picking up the chrome tone would be cool. Thanks! You know, I could probably even do it myself, I imagine, with a couple of shades of rub-n-buff? After a little observation and practice? And thanks, kp -- I appreciate your vote. I'll find a way to highlight the counter so it doesn't disappear into the wall color. Glad to know that someone else besides me notices through-composed floors! : ) And stinky, I do think the lighting fixture is beautiful, as you say -- once again, found at salvage, but I then searched online and found it at retail back in 2007 for about $200...the shades look like large crystal block ice cubes. The pantry is a combination of Ikea metal-mesh shelving (I like it because it's see-through but much tougher than that plastic-coated'ventilated' shelving with the ridges which I despise (it's just me -- other people may love it but it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me) -- we tried both, solid wood and the metal mesh, and I vastly preferred the metal because I could actually see what was on the higher shelves) and wood* on one wall because we couldn't get the metal in sizes we wanted, and the marmoleum counter. There will also be a mahogany (to match the Ikea Hallarum) sink cabinet and mahogany countertop edging (vintage floor moulding I've stripped and stained to match the Hallarum) as well. I'm completely in love with the marmoleum -- a kind g'webber pointed me in the direction of great wood tints and I've warmed up a light blue (again, salvage) to a joyous spring blue-green. I think if I could live my entire life in the nexus of brown, gray, gold, blue and green I'd be happy : ) *Yes, the wood is a salvage find too, an extremely high grade *new* plywood that we bought scads of random offcuts of...it's a very light off-white maple (I think) plywood, and we had no idea how it got to the salvage but one day we went to the Museum of Contemporary Craft here in Portland and saw the current exhibit on one of my idols, Betty Feves, and lo and behold, all the display stands for her pottery/ceramics were made of *exactly* the same wood! There's no mistaking it! So I'm one degree closer to Betty Feves now! I was thinking just to paint the plywood, but not after we discovered its noble provenance : ) Well, maybe after the vicarious thrill wears off and I want more uniformity in the room...but not now. o.k., just for the fun of it I'll link to the exhibit, just have to spread the Feves gospel wherever I can : ) Here is a link that might be useful: visceral, glorious Betty Feves

Beautiful washy! I need to try those palms out again, you can't beat their fast growth.

were gloves,they are like a combo of a say and a sharks mouth if you
reach in to the center and get snagged,I took my gloves off to untie a knot
and ripper my finger open on one of the teeth!~brutal!

Hey Jim, Thanks for posting the wrapping picture. Ihave 2 questions for you regarding what you did...

1. The C-9 X-Mas lights were all the heat needed to keep it warm enough below 35 degrees?

2. I noticed that you used plastic as a wrap. I was always under the impression that you can't use plastic because it traps in moisture and doesn't allow the palm to breathe?

The thermocube kept it above 30F all winter-the lowest outside temp was
-4F,there was some mold where the leaves touched the plastic-I
open the container on mild winter days to let moisture out.

I think they can live anywhere the soil doesn't get to wet and if they have summer warmth.

Thanks! Maybe someone needs to do a cross between a Filifera and a Fortunei or a Sabal. If the right traits were carried through via the Fortunei or Sabal, the Filfera would be able to do well in the Mid-Atlantic's moisture rich environment. "Filitunei or a Filibal" :)

Even though I'm at least a year to 2 away from starting my nursery, I'm looking for candidates to cross to create what I will call "The Empire Palm" obviously named after NY-The Empire State. They will be the "Toughest Hombres North Of The Chesapeake River."

It needs to be big, like our Skyline so even though Waggies are tough- they are too short.

Given that the Needle puts out suckers, I bet a Med./European Fan Palm would be an easier partner to cross it with.

If I could create my Empire Palm (within reason-meaning that any pinnate leaf palm is out of the running-given the zone 7 habitat). I'd want it to have the height and growth rate of a Filifera, the look of a Sabal Palmetto, the leaf strength of a Waggy and the cold hardiness and moisture tolerance of a Needle Palm. If that fantasy could ever be reality then "Neither Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Wind, Nor Ice, Nor Nor-easter, Nor Hurricane, Nor Blizzard Would Keep This Palm From Looking Its Best."

Hopefully one day in the near future- in a greenhouse in Nassau County, I will put on some Barry White music and get that sub-tropical orgy going.

I have seen some tall guys with short girls so maybe a Needle and UnFortunei wouldn't mind hooking up and those Neddles might help in that case ;p

I married a Taller girl and it worked out so I can say you are 100% right based on experience!

Does that mean if the cross was successful you could have a Fortunei that clumps and puts out suckers?
