seeds from dried store peppers

Has anyone tried to grow peppers from those store bought dried peppers? There are a whole lot of seeds in the bottom of the bag and the peppers do have a nice flavor.

I've grown a few different kinds. Dried seeds from pepper shakers at various pizza parlors never grew for me. Most of the seeds from store bought dried peppers (the kinds packed in clear bags) germinated okay and produced peppers similar to the originals. Plant yours and in two weeks or so you will know if the seeds are viable. Finding out what the fruit will be like takes a bit more patience and warmer weather than I'll see for a few months.

I tried it and none germinated. I guess it depends on how the chili's were dehydrated. The ones from my ristra were fine, but not from a pacakge.

Possible but not probable. First because store produce is often picked immature for shipping so the seeds haven't matured. And second because there is a 99% chance that a yellow pepper is a hybrid variety. Most hybrids don't breed true, they revert to their parent stock. So you may get some peppers but they won't be the same. Still, if you have the time and want to make the effort, you have nothing to lose so is worth a try just to see what you do get. Germinating seeds from purchased dried whole peppers

In my experiance it depends on the companies. Some germinate and some don't. I also found out that even though a zillion seeds from 1 pack didn't sprout when I tossed the rest in my used soil container that there must have been 1 pod that didn't get too hot because I had sprouts all over the place. Pure example of Murhies law. Try and get them to sprout and fail.Toss them in the junk pile and several grow...Have them growing all over the place.

Just happened to come across this post. I'd say 95% of my peppers were grown from store bought fruits. They have been productive and haven't given me much problems except for when I brought them outside from indoor growing. One of my sweet bell peppers is fully loaded, it has 6 or 7 giant fruit on it and 1 of them is starting to turn colour now. Here is a picture of my scotch bonnet also grown from store bought fruit.... Unfortunately I didn't put it in a good location because it's surrounded by green beans and a couple corn plants and fava beans.... The good news is the fava beans are almost ready so they'll be gone within a week, two max.

I think you can do its. Just make brine ( Distilled water and sea salt) About 2 to 2.5 TB spoon per quart of water, will make up the brine. Pout over the pods, press down so that nothing sticking out. Put some kind of weight on them (like extra brine in a zip bag. To speed p the fermentation , add a few spoons of plain yogurt whey. It will take a while until the pods have absorbed the brine. Then you should see that it is happening.

I have also tried some and as indicated above whether they germinate or not probably depends on such things as at how high a temperature they were dried. Only way to find out is to try.

I had no problem germinating and growing out seeds from two different bags of dried Thai chilies
