Planting Peonies without eyes

I received a bag of peonies recently. I planted all the ones with eyes two to three inches deep as usual and I also had quite a number of tubers with no eyes. I planted these at the same depth as the others. Will these get eyes or just rot away? Thanks for any information you have about this subject.

I wanna thank you guys for posting info on growing peony roots without eyes. My brother dug up several heirloom plants (red, white, and rose color) put them in a bag and gave them to me. Well, some of the roots broke off and I was going to just discard them. SO GLAD I DIDN'T!! I actually had put them in the garbage container. After I read these posts, I jumped out of bed and dug in the container (it wasn't too bad) and pulled the plastic bag of roots out of there. I'll find a nice area to plant them and let you know how it goes. I have about four that are about an inch in diameter!

There is no way to tell for sure, but it is worth taking a chance. Al

They have to have eyes to grow, however you can't always see them at this point. I've planted many that I didn't see the eye when they went into the ground. I'd say at least 50% grew but that does leave a pretty large percentage of failure. There are ways to encourage eye development before planting but I'm not a good one to discuss that. Someone else will jump in here I'm sure. They are fabulous plants, worth the risk! Ginny

I didn't respond to this post before because I knew it would get me to looking at Chris Rogers intro's again. She and Dan Hansen have some intros that have eye no edges. I spent hours on his website before drooling. I will eventually order a couple from him. Here are two that definitely caught my eye in this category. Does dormant eye bud division work for tree peonies?

That's what I have always thought before, but when I look at grafted tree peonies, I'm finding that the underground part of the branch gradually changes its cell structure to look more like a tuber that can hold energy and generate roots. Too bad I don't have any dormant buds to try out, but I believe the base of a bud may have the same properties as a branch. I believe it's a possibility, and the one advantage I can see with this type of a division if it is possible with tree peonies is a guaranteed species as opposed to seeds which can have variation. I plan on trying it out with a few sample TP buds.

Propagating itoh peonies from dormant eyes

I was able to get some itohs at reasonable prices from eBay, but most sources list them at $50-100 which is kind of crazy considering how easily they propagate, but I like itohs so I'll be collecting even more species once I get a chance. I only have 8 of them so far. I like how they can easily be split up for viable divisions, even from small fragments, and I also have herbaceous peonies that I can graft the woody stems onto if I want to make more plants.

I'm glad you recovered them and are taking the chance, kplant! Just plant them horizontally if it's a single piece of root, about 2 inches deep. If it's a cluster where no eyes have formed yet just plant it like you would if it had eyes.

Did they grow? I just chopped my roots up by accident. Big mess of just Tubers. Going to move to a new location. I have tubers from 30 yr old planes. Didn’t think to be gentle and just shoveled out. I have buckets of Tibet’s size of sweet potatoes.

They Did! I have beautiful red and pink peonies. For some reason, the white ones didn't grow. So please, go ahead and get them in the ground and please be patient and you will be rewarded.

I also have some leftover that are just tubers. I kept the tubers in pots all winter, and some of them are developing white roots shooting off them....So I've kept them in the hopes they will sprout buds....

I dug up a tuber a week ago with one eye, and started to let it dry in air inside house. i was going to wrap and store for the winter. now i wonder if i should plant it in ground again. i live in southern California.
