Help with germinating old man palm seeds

About six months ago I planted 4 old man palm seeds in 4 pots with peat moss and perlite. From one of the pots arose a small stem/leaf. In the past week, that stem turned brown and died. I dug up the root and it was yellow but the tip of the root was brown. In addition, the seed dissapeared. Is this normal? Has this plant died? Should I cut off the brown part of the root? Please help.
