HELP!!! Palm seed Germination for novice

Hello, I have never tried to germinate palm/cycad seeds before & I keep seeing the use of the baggie method, now I no it means putting seed into a sealed bag but with how much Peat (The medium available to me), Do you shake bag after placement of seed or do they lay on the top of medium, lastly anyone have any photographs they can post of this method.

I have never germinated any cycads but the way i do palm seed is : Put them in a ziploc baggie with peat moss
about half full
First i put the peat in then i put the seeds in , i shake the bag , mist the peat so it is damp not wet
then you want heat so i put mine in the attic or i will
use bottom heat on the bag on top of or beside the water heater works good , in the bottom of the stove etc..
I have germinated lots of seeds like this ..
ROBUSTAS ARE THE EASIEST FOR ME .....Good Luck !

The amount isn't that important. I laid down a layer of humid peat, put the seeds on top, then laid down another layer of peat to cover them. Kind of like a sandwitch, which is funny if you think I also put them in zip-locks

As far as the peat is concerned, I found the best thing was to fill a glass with peat, drench it in water, let it set for 10 minutes or so, then squeeze all the water out. This will leave it humid, not wet.

Close the ziplock (at least that is what worked for me), and check every week or so, to make sure it is still humid in there. If not, just add a few drops of water.

I'm wondering if you have enough time in your growing season to get blooms. Anyone have any thoughts on that? They'll germinate quickly, but maybe won't flower. Maybe. If you have a bunch of seeds, you might want to set some aside for next season just in case. Moonflower vine is an annual - treat them like morning glories b/c that's what they essentially are. Mine are in part sun - they are climbing a large willow teepee trellis. I would soak them at least 48 hours and perhaps nick them with a nail clipper if you wish. I've been told by morning glory people that it's best not to fertilize - otherwise you get plenty of green and very few blooms.

nash, date palm seeds can be germinated any number of ways. If you're lucky enough to have a greenhouse, you can just plant them the same as other seeds, taking care not to let the soil completely dry out. You can also use the baggy method. Soak your seeds for 2 to 3 days, changing the water each day. Final soaking of an hour or so with a little fungicide or a few drops of bleach added to the water to kill any fungus. Then place in semi-moist (not soaking wet...you should only be able to squeeze a few drops of water from a fistful of soil) potting medium. Most folks use vermiculite and/or spaghum peat moss. I received a packet of 10 needle palm seeds (R. hystrix) from rarepalmseeds on November 4th. Soaked the seeds for 3 days in warm water with change of water each day and scapping off any husk material as it softened up. Put the seeds in barely-moist vermiculite in a flip top sandwich bag, and then inside a ziplock with a few other species treated the same way. The bags sat at room temp a couple of days before I remembered the top of the TV cable box stays consistently warm (28 degrees C), so moved the bags there on Nov. 10. Yesterday, (11/16/08) was checking on Sable minor seeds (in the same ziplock)...and thought, "why not check the rest"...found one R.hystrix seed germinated with about a 1/2 radicle developed! I had planned on at least 30 days for them and it was less than a week at warm temp. Encouraging! These results may not be typical, and I may not get any more to germinate...also, I don't know how rarepalmseeds stored them or how long, so there may be some mechanism of storage or cold that helped to break their dormancy...
